Lake Murray Purple Martins offer lake goers on Lake Murray around Lexington, Irmo, Gilbert, and Chapin a great chance to see the flight of thousands of these birds to one tiny island on Lake Murray.  Their seasonal flight takes place in the early dawn hours and in the evening when they head for what the locals call Bomb Island.  Bomb Island, which was once used as a practice bombing range is home to what is estimated to be between 500,000 – 700,000 birds.    The best time to view this largest natural roosting area is in July and August when you can take your own boat out on the lake or take an evening boat tour to the island.  By Septemer the birds will be headed off to South America for the winter, so get out there soon to enjoy this spectacle.

Lexington SC Downtown parking is set to improve according to a recent article in the Lexington Chronicle.  Lexington town leaders have given initial approval to purchase a property that will serve as a large parking area, with up to 260 parking spaces, to serve the downtown area.   This lot will be availalble for general use and will also allow downtown Lexinton to support some additional festivals, including the FunFest.  Plans call for having irrigation and electrical outlets to allow for such events and attractions.  Lexington SC Real Estate will benefit by the added convenience of expanded parking downtown and hopefully some fun activities in the future.

Gilbert Peach Festival a Huge Success

Gilbert Peach Festival a Huge Success  

The Gilbert Peach Festival was a huge success in 2009! The morning started off with the 51st annual peach parade that included everyone from beauty queens to local elected officials.  Following the parade was live entertainment, arts/crafts, the peachy recipe contest, and even a car show! Locals could also sample different types of peach recipes such as peach cobbler, peach ice cream, peach tea, etc. Then the night ended with a bang with a beautiful fireworks display!  Over the years, the festival has allowed the community to raise funds for local projects, one of the largest  being the Gilbert Community Park, where the festival now takes place.  Other projects include donations to schools, the fire department, the town library, Girl’s State, and Festival Scholarships.

Lexington SC Real EstateTaxes will remain unchanged according to a recent article in the Lexington Chronicle.  This decision comes after much debate and concern over whether or not the district would receive some much needed stimulus money.  The Lexington District 1school board said that with 6 million dollars in stimulus money, the possbile tax increase as well as possible layoffs are no longer needed.  The money will save 36 teaching positions, which is great news for Lexinton 1 schools and Lexington residents with children in schools.
