Lexington Irmo Lake Murray Real Estate Update 8-26-2010

Gibson Pond scenic overlook to open Tuesday – The views of Gibson Pond have just gotten better. The Town of Lexington will officially open a new scenic overlook at the pond site on Tuesday, Aug. 31. It is the latest of new amenities made possible by the town’s partnerships with businesses and organizations. The boardwalk and overlook was funded by donations from the Lexington Sertoma Club, which raise more than $8,800 in a Big Thursday fundraising event last year. The walkway provides access that is handicapped accessible, to the creek below the Gibson Pond dam, town parks director Dan Walker said. The overlook offers scenic views of the creek and pond, and a staircase allows access to the rocky creek area.

Grant to improve water in the Hollow Creek Watershed - Lexington County has been awarded a grant from the SC Dept. of Health and Environmental Control (SCDHEC) to reduce bacteria levels in the Hollow Creek Watershed located near the Town of Batesburg-Leesville. The goal of the Hollow Creek Watershed Project is to work with local land owners on voluntary projects, which reduce bacteria from agricultural activities, failing septic systems and wildlife. Hollow Creek is a recreational resource for Lexington County, as citizens enjoy fishing, picnicking and canoeing along the banks of the creek and its tributaries. The watershed feeds directly into Lake Murray, which is directly impacted by the health of the creek. Hollow Creek is impaired due to high levels of fecal coliform bacteria which is an indicator of human and animal waste.

Keith Platt performs at Edmund First Baptist Church in Lexington – Don’t miss South Gospel Music Soloist and Dove Aware winner Keith Plott’s performance on Sunday, Sept. 5 at Edmund First Baptist Church. Plott has previously performed with Danny Funderbunk, Mercy’s Way and Brian Free & Assurance. The concert starts at 6p.m. The church is located at 6256 Edmund Hwy. in Lexington.

12th Annual Dam Swim for Drew Sept. 18 – On Saturday, Sept. 18, the Lexington High School Swim Team will host the 12th Annual “Dam Swim for Drew”. Registration begins at 8a.m. with the first wave of swimmers entering the water at 9a.m. The two mile open water swim across Lake Murray begins from the Irmo boat landing, crosses the lake past the three towns and concludes on the Lexington side of the dam at the SCE&G park. The purpose of the annual swim across the dam is to raise awareness of boating and swimming safety in memory of Drew Smith. Drew was killed in a boating accident when a group of boaters made the decision to drink and drive all day on Lake Murray. They rammed into the boat young Drew and his dad, Randy were driving. Randy Smith survived the ordeal, Drew did not. As a result of Drew’s death, SC State Senators introduced legislation for “Boating Under the Influence” soon after the accident, SC Code 50-21-112 soon became known as “Drew’s Law”.

Lexington volleyball preparing for another run at state title – Lexington volleyball coach Chee Lee led the Lady Wildcats to the state championship game last season. The Lady ‘Cats dropped a 3-0 decision to Dorman in the state final. This year, Lexington is looking to return to the state title game, and this time raise the Class 4-A first place trophy. “These players are psyched about getting back to the state championship game,” Lee said.

B-C confident about season, rivalry game – There’s a new confident attitude around the Brookland-Cayce football program. After a winless 2009, the Bearcats have re-dedicated themselves to improving. That attitude, along with a new offense, may be just what B-C needs to get back to the Class 3-A playoffs.

Great Scott!! Irmo rusher scores 4 TD’s – Irmo running back Dawan Scott rushed for 212 yards and four touchdowns in the Yellow Jackets’ 28-26 win over rival Dutch Fork Friday. Scott had three touchdowns in the first half, helping Irmo build a 21-13 lead. In the second half, he broke a 70 yard touchdown run that would turn out to be the game winning score!

Call 803-254-8234 more more information.

Art opening

Toby Morriss came to Columbia in 2005 to flee the Gulf Coast after Hurricane Katrina. His life and career were cut short after a hit-and-run accident Feb. 21 at the age of 36. His works will be displayed at SilverYana, beginning Saturday on the 2nd floor of the North Gallery at USC’s McKissick Museum.

Celebration of water

It’s from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and is included with museum admission.

Edventure – Correction

Don’t get too excited about the big trucks just yet. We mixed up the date, so you’ll have to put it on your calendar for Sept. 25. But you can check out a more delicate matter at the EdVenture museum this weekend. Blooming Butterflies will put the miracle of life on display at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Saturday as newly emerged butterflies will be released into their new home in the exhibit. An EdVenture educator will be around to give you the opportunity to ask questions, too. It’s $3, in addition to regular admission.

Lexington Irmo Lake Murray Real Estate Update 8-20-2010

Filed under: Lexington Sc Real Estate — lexingtonscrealtor @ 7:45 pm

Lexington Irmo Lake Murray Real Estate Update 8-20-2010

Lexington traffic plan moves on – US 378 barriers ditched for now – A Lexington traffic plan for U.S. 378 will move ahead without concrete medians. Town Council voted 6-1 Monday evening to endorse its traffic improvements plan without the barriers. The project will continue to be evaluated and medians can be added at a later date, if needed, according to state transportation officials. The plan, now 6 years in the making is expected to improve traffic congestion along a two block stretch of U.S. 378 between Butler St. and Park Rd.

Student fees rise in county – Hard pressed school districts are trying to hold fees at last year’s levels. With cuts in state money, districts are increasing class sizes, cutting elective classes and downsizing payrolls through attrition to avoid raising fees and cafeteria breakfast and lunch costs. Student fees in Lexington 3 in Batesburg-Leesville and Lexington 5 in Chapin-Irmo will not rise. Lexington 1 is raising only $25 in athletic fees, and Lexington 2 in Cayce-West Columbia is raising only its year -long athletic fees. High school sports fees will go from $50 to $75 and middle school from $25 to $50. Lexington 4 in Gaston and Swansea has not yet responded to a request for information on fees. Lexington 5 held the line on fees but raised student breakfast fees to $1.25 and lunch in elementary schools to $2.25 and middle and high schools to $2.50.

Lexington tops region in athletics – Once again, Lexington athletics are the gold standard in the Chronicle Region. The SC Athletic Administrators Association released its Director’s Cup standing, and Lexington finished third in Class 4-A behind Dorman and Wando. The standing are calculated by where a school finishes in more than 20 events. Lexington finished with 840 points, 200 behind first place Dorman. The Wildcats were led by championship seasons from boys cross country and girls golf along with runner-up finishes in boys basketball, boys tennis and volleyball.
