Lexington Irmo Lake Murray Real Estate Update 9-23-2010

Lexington steps up walking trails – Paths could reach Saluda River – Walking trails along 14-Mile Creek in Lexington are a step closer to reality. Town Council gave preliminary approval Monday to a plan for a one-mile walking, jogging and bicycle path to be built in eastern Lexington which proponents hope will eventually extens up to ten miles to the lower Saluda River. It would be the first of many such trails located along buffers to town sewer lines in central Lexington County, they said.

1st OktoberFest a hit in Lexington – When people ask why is Lexington having an OktoberFest in September, what do you tell them? When do you think they have it in Germany? Oktoberfest in Germany runs two weeks and starts in September. OktoberFest in Lexington runs one week and starts in September, too. True to the spirit of the early Germans who settled Lexington County, it would not be an OktoberFest without a parade, bands and a beer garden.

Average county SAT scores improve – Average SAT scores in Lexington County continue to rise as do the number of students taking the college readiness exam. Statewide, student average scores fell five points in 2010, according to the College Board that administers the exam. Two districts – Lexington 1 and Lexington/Richland 5 – were among nine that exceeded state and national averages of 1,443 and 1,497 respectively. And four high schools, Lexington, Pelion, Chapin and Dutch Form also exceeded national average SAT scores.

VFW Dance – Lexington VFS Post 8738 is hosting an evening of line dancing, shagging and slow dancing Friday, Sept. 24 from 7 to 11p.m. Millie Black and the Smile Band will be featured at the Cedar Crest Drive event – $5 ticket includes light snacks.

Veterans Breakfast Club begins in Cayce – You’ve served us, now we’d like to serve you.” Anne Smith issued an invitation to members of the Cayce Memorial American Legion Post 130 to eat, reminisce, and fellowship with former comrades in arms. The Wednesday morning 8 a.m. gatherings at the Post will include a light breakfast with plenty of coffee. The price is only $3. There will be plenty of board and card games, and hopefully if things go as planned, there will be movies for entertainment. Smith said former service members are welcome to bring a guest and they have a change in the daily routine. “It will be a great time to fellowship with fellow veteran members of the Post and to make new friends.”

Lexington Irmo Lake Murray Real Estate Update 9-16-2010

Lexington Chamber plans relocation – The Greater Lexington Chamber of Commerce plans to relate to a larger building on Main Street. The new office will occupy a 1.87 acre lot adjacent to RPM Engineers, Inc. one of the Chamber’s 800 plus members. Given its expanding growth, and increased member services, the Chamber’s Board of Directors voted unanimously last week to relocate from their South Lake Drive location to Main Street. A 7,000 square foot concrete pad and infrastructure is already in place at the new location, which is large enough to accommodate the Chamber and offices for a tenant. A much larger Lexington Visitors and Information Center along with larger conference and meeting room facilities are also planned. The Chamber plans to buy the property and immediately start a capital campaign for construction. The Board predicts it could be several years before the new building is ready. This is a positive step for our Chamber’s members and the Greater Lexington community, said Randy Halfacre Chamber President.

Brooks Teacher of the Year – Mrs. Mary Brooks has been selected as Lexington Two’s District Teach of the Year for 2010/11. Mrs. Brooks has been the Guidance Counselor for 4 year child development through first grade students at Congaree-Wood Early Childhood Center since 1999.

Lexington expanding Virginia Hylton Park – Lexington town leaders are adding land to Virginia Hylton Park. Town Council gave initial approval this month to the purchase of more land along the park’s Church Street side. The town plans to purchase 2.28 acres at 350 S. Church Street to be used for park expansion. The proposed $230l000 purchase includes a house and pond.

Family, friends celebrate Pastor Swicegood’s birthday – Sunday Aug. 29 marked the 100th birthday of Pastor Dermont Swicegood. He is currently a member of St. David Lutheran Church in West Columbia and former Pastor of both Mt. Tabor Lutheran Church in West Columbia and Pisgah Lutheran Church in Lexington as well as four Lutheran parishes in North Carolina. His birthday was celebrated with a worship service led by his family members followed by a program and chicken stew dinner prepared by the Boy Scouts, one of his true passions; shared with his love as a founder of Lutheridge Camp in Arden, NC and his faithful support of the Gamecocks. Rev. Swicegood graduated from Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary, Columbia in 1935 and has been ordained for 75 years. One of only 5 living ELCA pastors in the United States and the eldest in South Carolina. He resides at Laurel Crest Presbyterian Home in West Columbia. Recently when asked by USC football Coach Steve Spurrier, “How can we have a better football team?” Pastor Swicegood replied, “Just put me in as quarterback, Coach and we can win more games!”

Eagles beginning to build winning tradition –Airport head coach Kirk Burnett was trying to remember the numbers. “We’re 49-1 on Thursday nights, which is an incredible number.” Burnett credits the gaudy record to the coaches at the JV level who just so happen to patrol the sideline on Friday as well. These coaches are from the area , they coach other sports…they are coaching kids of the parents they went to school with. It’s easier to get on the same page.”
