Lexington’s 21st Century Minstrel – Champion Dulcimist Michael Shull to Perform at Shiloh UMC – An admirer of his music once said attending a Michael Shull concert is like being a guest on his back porch – with a lot more space. You feel at home. The personality you observe in performance is no different from the Michael Shull you might run across in the supermarket tomorrow. His songs, stores and testimony, and the extraordinary sounds he draws from a simple mountain instrument, are “gentle on the spirit and heartwarming for the soul,” The lifelong Lexington County resident and his wife Janice regularly are in demand, traversing the Southeast in their well-oiled RV. A four time national award-winning dulcimist, Michael has entertained hundreds of festival and concert audiences. He’ll be on home turf Saturday, April 2 to present a 7p.m. concert at Shiloh United Methodist Church, 1000 Springhill Road, off U.S. 1 between Lexington and Gilbert.

Clowning around to bring Bright Moments to others – In retirement, Bert and Donna Holland found a new career, ministering to senior in retirement facilities, the home bound and sick children by providing clown and pet therapy. Bert Holland knows that sometimes laughter is the best medicine. Holland and his wife, Donna established Brighter Moments Outreach to bring smiles to the faces of people who need it the most. Brighter Moments Outreach is an integral part of all aspects of my life, faith, family, health and community. I truly feel spiritually guided to provide this outreach ministry. It has strengthened our family bond and provides me with so much joy that it has to be good for my health, after all, “age may wrinkle the face, but lack of enthusiasm wrinkles the soul.”

Lake Murray Real Estate Update 03-21-2011

Taste of Lake Murray is March 24 – The Taste of Lake Murray will be held March 24 at the Radisson Hotel and Conference Center on Bush River Road in Columbia. The annual event, which raises money for Fourth of July fireworks celebration on the lake, will begin at 6:30p.m. Tickets are $45 per person and can be purchased at the regional tourism office at 2184 North Lake Drive, or online at TasteOfLakeMurray.com. This year’s fireworks display will be held July 2.

Crosses for Christ Project blankets Lake Murray – A special Easter promotion sanctioned by Chapin United Methodist Church should result in placing over 400 Crosses for Christ in the Chapin area of Lake Murray Country beginning this week. Eldon Armstrong, a pharmacist and certified lay speaker in the United Methodist Church, announced today that crosses assembled by volunteers of the church are available to the membership. The significance of the project Armstrong said is to place emphasis on Christ’s crucifixion and resurrection, especially with children. He conceived this project during a pilgrimage to the Hold Land in April of last year.

Lexington Medical Center’s Colon Cancer Challenge set for March 26 – Did you know that colon cancer is the second leading cancer killer in the United States? The American Cancer Society estimates that nearly 800 South Carolinians die of colon cancer each year. But it’s also one of the most preventable forms of cancer and curable when detected early. Lexington Medical Center will host its second annual Colon Cancer Challenge, a bike ride to raise awareness and funds for colon cancer. Proceeds from the bike ride will pay for colonoscopies for patients who are uninsured or underinsured. More than 200 bikers are expected to participate. Last year’s event raised $10,000 and provided 25 colonoscopies. The event is set for March 26, 2011 and begins at Dutch Fork High School. There will also be fun activities for families throughout the day and vendors.

Lexington Irmo Lake Murray Real Estate Update 03-21-2011

Local Marine hero honored – He says he is no hero, just a Marine doing his duty. Lance Corporal Kyle Carpenter was told different last week at the South Carolina Statehouse. Last November Carpenter took the full blast from a Taliban hand grenade while attempting to save the life of his good friend and fellow Marine, Corporal Nick Eufrazio.

In the Senate chambers, the Lexington County man was recognized by state Sen. Jake Knotts and other lawmakers for his actions. A little publicly known fact was reported by Knotts. When Carpenter was carried off the plane in Germany, the first person to greet him was Master Sergeant Charles Williams of the SC Air National Guard. Williams, from Chapin, was on military leave from the Senate’s Sergeant at Arms Office, serving his second tour in Germany and assigned an an assistant chaplain to the Intensive Care Unit for the Wounded Warrior Project. Carpenter does not recall the Master Sergeant’s being there, he was unconscious for more than 10 days following the catastrophic injuries in Afghanistan. His life hung in the balance for days while Williams remained by his side praying and reminding him that he was there representing the folks back home. Sen. Knotts described Carpenter as the epitome of an American hero and, “We are blessed to have him in our presence today.”

Lexington eyes new dog park – Lexington’s newest park may be going to the dogs. Town leaders will consider establishing a dog park for town residents to use with their pets. Adding the amenity is important to residents who are dog owners, Mayor Randy Halfacre said. “A lot of people think it’s a good idea and an amenity that the town should offer.” Halfacre said. He said citizens have been requesting the facility for more than a year.

Lexington to host softball tourney – Lexington will host some of the best softball talent in the state March 18-19 at the Lady Wildcat Invitational held at Pinegrove Complex in West Columbia. The Lady Wildcats will face Spring Valley in the first game of pool play Friday. Lexington County schools White Knoll and Brookland-Cayce will also take part in the tournament.
