Lexington Irmo Lake Murray Real Estate Update 05-20-2011

Lexington to unveil Downtown Farmer’s Market Saturday –Lexington will open its new Farmers Market on Main Street Saturday. Ten vendors will be on hand to celebrate the grand opening of the town market at the Old Sessions department store site at 116 E. Main St. They will bring fruits, vegetables, jellies, jams, crafts, seafood, plants and flowers for ale from 9a.m. to 1p.m. The market will be open from June to October on the second and fourth Saturdays of each month. Town leaders hope the new venture will bring more people to Main Street and downtown Lexington. “Activity breeds activity. We hope this will bring people to downtown who will come back to visit other businesses,” Mayor Randy Halfacre said. The Lexington farmer’s market is patterned after a similar venture run by the City of Greenville. It has room for 20 vendors, and town officials hope to add even more as the market grows. To spur participation in the new venture, the town is waiving vendor fees for the first year. Anything we can do to improve traffic flow will be a positive for Lexington, he said.

Lexington boys set new record – Lexington runners Tony Morales, Erik Wendt, Zack Trim, Blake White and Colby Coulter set a new school record at the Class 4-A state track meet Saturday. The Wildcats’ 4×800 meter relay team ran a 7:55.25 to finish first overall in the Event. The Lexington girls also set a school record with a time of 9:42.48. Runners for the Lady Wildcats were Allie Callari, Karen Grier, Kaitln Keene, Katelin Killman, Haylee Love and Meri Heneage.

Hucks, Faulkner returning to LHS – Wando head baseball coach Banks Faulkner is taking a job as an assistant at Lexington High School. Faulkner, a former Wildcat player, announced he will be joining former Brookland-Cayce head coach Brian Hucks on the Lexington staff. “I have decided to return to my alma mater to help (Hucks) rebuild the baseball program I care deeply about,” Faulkner said. “I would like to thank all my players and coaches for their hard work and support this season.” As a player, Faulkner helped lead the Wildcats to the 1999 state championship. Faulkner has worked as an assistant at Lexington and Gilbert. He led Wando to an 18-13 record this season. “While this opportunity is exciting, it is hard to leave behind the young men in the Wando baseball program. They are, and always will be, very special to me and have made a big impact on my life.”

Lake Murray Real Estate Update 05-13-2011

4-H Offers Summer Camps on Lake – This summer will bring fun times for most who visit Lake Murray. In addition, some of these visitors will also get an education. 4-H2O is a youth education program that has been held annually across the state for more than 12 years. It is a water-based science camp put on by Clemson Extension, SC 4-H, and Carolina Clear that runs in more than 15 counties across South Carolina, allowing students the opportunity to learn and experience this state’s water resources first-hand. This field-based program provides youth and young adults with knowledge about their water resources through hands on activities, standard and tried curriculum, and critical thinking. Campers will participate in activities such as mapping watersheds, boating, canoeing, fishing, river walking, water testing, wildlife identification, swimming, field trips to water treatment facilities, and much more, all while learning about water safety, ecosystems, conservation, natural resources, pollution, lake history, and more. All programs emphasize exploring shoreline and watershed science disguised in a fun summer camp experience.

Lake Murray Association’s Pontoon Tour of Homes this Saturday – LMA’s Pontoon Tour of Homes is one of spring’s highlights on Lake Murray. This year will mark the 16th year we have hosted this event. The boats will launch from Jakes Landing bringing the tour to the Lexington side of the lake this year. Five very gracious homeowners will be opening their beautiful lake homes for the 2011 tour. Each home is spectacular and depicts their unique style of lake living.

Lexington Irmo Lake Murray Real Estate Update 05-13-2011

Michelin: 270 new jobs for Lexington – Michelin North America will spend $200 million to expand its Lexington County facilities and add 270 new jobs. The plan, announced Monday will increase the tire manufacturer’s investment in Lexington County to $1 billion. Michelin has been operating in the county since 1981. Work on the expansion will begin immediately. When completed in 2013, Michelin will employ 2,100 people in Lexington County. The new facility will help the Greenville based Michelin to increase its tire making capacity, as demand for passenger tires increases. The Michelin brand has been resilient during the recent economic crisis. “As the economy turned, the demand for our tires increased dramatically,” said Dick Wilkerson, chairman and president of Michelin North America. “We must have more capacity for high performance passenger car tires,” he said.

Walmart, Haley tout 4,000 more jobs for S.C. – Wal-Mart announced it will invest $400 million and bring 4,000 more jobs to South Carolina. This will mean a dozen new stores and expansion of other stores, Gov. Nikki Haley and Wal-Mart CEO Bill Simon announced at the Farmer’s Market. The announcement came days after Wal-Mart helped block a sales tax break for Amazon.com. The move ended Amazon’s plans to build and operate a 1 million square foot distribution center in Lexington County near Columbia Metro Airport. Amazon is reportedly negotiating in at least two other states to take its operations there if it can be exempted from collecting sales taxes on sales made to instate resident. Airport Executive Director Dan Mann said he did not expect the Amazon pullout to hurt airport traffic.

Lexington County Museum wins award – The Lexington County Museum was presented with an Award of Merit from the Confederation of South Carolina Local Historical Societies at the 2011 Landmark Conference in Walterboro, SC for its work in restoring the John Fox Slave Quarters. The restoration project included removing twentieth century siding and installing period correct siding and a period correct fireplace into the structure. An exhibit demonstrating how slaves lived in Lexington County in the 1850s was installed in the restored cabin. The award of merit is given to individuals and organizations that complete exceptional projects that advance local history. Founded in 1970, the Lexington County Museum focuses on Lexington County’s history from the colonial period to the Civil War.
