Lake Murray Real Estate Update 08-26-2011

Lake Murray Marina Site to Host New Restaurant – Veteran commercial real estate developer Ben Arnold of Columbia, who last week announced plans to redevelop Lake Murray Marina & Yacht Club near Ballentine, has emphasized that the property’s popular restaurant, now destroyed, that has attracted thousands for more than half a century will still be available to the public when rebuilt. The only major change that will affect the public in the area is that the boat launching facilities will no longer be available. The boat launching had to be taken away because the site does not have sufficient room for boaters to park their vehicles and boat trailers. Boat parking will be accessible at the dock to those who come by water. Arnold’s ambition is for the restaurant to continue to offer a good atmosphere and to replace the popular Dockside restaurant with a very modern facility that offers the public the latest stare-of-the-art design, one that will feature a casual atmosphere and a menu of popular food selections including local seafood and fresh ingredients.

Power Squadron Offers Boating Courses – Lake Murray Power Squadron will present America’s Boating Course September 13 at LMPS Headquarters on Flotilla Island. Open to all ages and running each Tuesday evening through October 11. The goal of the event is to enhance the pleasure and skills of boaters in the area. For more information go to www.lmpsonline.com.

Lexington Irmo Lake Murray Real Estate Update 08-26-2011

Smart lights may ease local traffic - Lexington may get a relatively inexpensive traffic congestion solution. Traffic engineer Dan Dennis said “smart” traffic lights with cameras can adapt to changing traffic flows, particularly during morning and afternoon rush hours. This was one of the suggestions planners made at a public briefing Tuesday on the Town of Lexington’s new five-year vision plan. The planners suggested reducing congestion on Lexington’s Main St. by crating truck routes around the historic downtown area. “Do you know how many trucks a day drive through town on U.S. 1,” he asked . It’s 152, we know because we counted them. One route would channel westbound U.S. 1 truck traffic through Harmon St. to Columbia Avenue. Eastbound truck traffic would be routed from U.S. 1 down Gibson Rd. to S. Lake Drive. Planners envision walking and biking paths around town to connect residential and retail area. “People will walk five to 10 minutes to go somewhere,” planner Irene Tyson said. The planners also recommended that truck routes be turned into attractive boulevards with trees and biking and walking paths and that entrances to town be beautiful.

Lance Corporal Kyle Carpenter benefit scheduled – It’s been almost a year and surgeries continue, but his smile never fades. That’s the way one admirer of Lance Corporal Kyle Carpenter described the young Gilbert Marine that sustained massive head, face, arm and body wounds while trying to save a fellow Marine in Afghanistan. Carpenter, a graduate of Wyman King Academy was welcomed when he attended last Friday night’s game at the school. As he was being greeted, youngsters were made to feel comfortable in talking about the massive scare on his body and face, as the Marine answered each question. Kyle, proclaimed by the State Legislature as a Palmetto State Hero, has been described as authentic, genuine, kind and gregarious. “He exemplifies the qualities of character that many of us so admire and recognize of those in service,” said one lady who stood in line just to shake his hand. A special Bar-B-Q Chicken Dinner will be held Sunday, Sept. 18 from 4p.m. until 7p.m.. The events sponsored by the Lutheran Churches of the Lexington area in the SC Synod have told the Chronicle they are excited about this event for several reasons. “First, like all citizens, we’re supportive of our troops and veterans and wish to see them properly supported. We have a responsibility to support those who protect us. Secondly, as the Church we have a holy obligation to advocate for our troops, especially those who suffer mental and/or other physical wounds to ensure that they receive the assistance for which they paid so dearly. The Sept. 18th event will be held at Reflections Banquet Hall in Lexington from 4 to 7p.m. Red Reynolds says a patriotic program will begin at 5:30p.m. and is expected to be an event to remember. For more information, please call 808-8466.

Save the Dates! Town Theatre Presents South Pacific
September 9, 2011 – October 1, 2011

Ten years ago this month, Town Theatre opened its 83rd season with the musical blockbuster South Pacific and, after a mammoth opening weekend, America as we knew it was forever changed by 9/11. Immediately thereafter, each performance of the 2001 South Pacific was dedicated to the First Responders and all Americans devastated by that day’s events. The cast and audience joined hearts and hands in singing “God Bless America.” Additionally, Town generated more than $3,500 that was given to the local Red Cross for relief efforts. As our nation remembers this day on the tenth anniversary, Town Theatre will again offer South Pacific as our way to commemorate and remember. Indeed, we will never forget. Please join with us in a fundraising effort to benefit our local First Responders and to acknowledge those in our audience as well as all men and women who have or are serving in our military. The show’s timeless tunes – “Some Enchanted Evening,” “I’m Gonna Wash That Man Right Out Of My Hair” and “Bali Ha’i,” – alone are worth the price of admission. However, the classic story from the Golden Age of American Musical Theatre will enchant those who have loved it for years as well as those experiencing it for the first time. Visit the Town Theatre website for additional info.

Lake Murray Real Estate Update 08-22-2011

Evaporation, drought bringing lake level down – A few weeks back during the heat wave, a neighbor commented that the water level was steadily dropping and it was likely SCE G was pulling the plug in order to meet the rising electrical demand. The neighbor’s analysis was partly true. On July 26, the utility did pull the plug in response to a system failure. Stream flow below the dam reached 18,000 cfs before returning to the minimum flow of 500 cfs – some 6 hours later. The lake level dropped almost one inch that day, partly because of generation, and partly because of evaporation and municipal water withdrawls. Other than that recent discharge, SCE & G’s use of the lake’s water this summer for emergencies has been to say the least, miniscule.

Lake Murray Symphony Orchestra holding auditions – Lake Murray Symphony Orchestra is seeking experienced bassoon, French horn and players in all string sections. The orchestra now in its 7th season, is comprised of volunteer musicians and is dedicated to performing classical, ligh classical and pop music, exposing the audience to a variety of quality live music. For rehearsal and audition information, call (803)400-3540 or see www.LMSO.org.

Labor Day Festival to host talent show – The Town of Chapin’s Labor Day Festival will be holding a Chapin Idol talent show September 5 in downtown Chapin on its own special stage off Clark Street. The show will begin after the parade. All ages and all varieties of talent are welcome. For more information, go to www.Chapinsc..com. Entry fee is $10 per solo, $15 per duet, and $20 per group. Monetary prizes will be awarded for each category.

Lexington Irmo Lake Murray Real Estate Update 08-19-2011

Summer fun is not over yet – The Town of Lexington’s 150th Anniversary Historical Sites Scavenger Hunt for children is now in session. A limited number of passports are still available that will allow children to take photos of Lexington’s treasured landmarks. Parents may pick up the passports at Town Hall Customer Service, 111 Maiden Lane or at the Columbia Regional Visitors Center, 1101 Lincoln St. in Columbia. The hunt will last until Sept. 2, 2011. Small prizes will be awarded to all participants.

Wine Walk funds may build memorial fountain – A memorial square may be the first project for a Lexington beautification group. The Lexington Beautification Foundation has been working with Lexington County for nearly a year on plans to oversee construction and maintenance of a memorial fountain at the corner of Main Street and South Lake Drive. The holdup is design plans needed for the fountain and a memorial square that will anchor a corner of the space next to the Lexington County Judicial Center. Design plans for the fountain are in the work, said Lexington Foundation chairwoman Jewitte Dooley. The fountain project is the group’s number one priority and will determine how it spends money it has raised holding Wine Walk events over the past two years. Those events have raised about $90,000. “Before we spend any money, we want to make sure we are doing the best project to help beautify the town,” Dooley said.

Do you make plans every year to attend the Craftsmen’s show at the Fairgrounds? Do you love handmade items from paintings to jewelry to pottery to furniture? Well, you no longer have to wait for the crafts fair to come to town! I recently discovered a hard-to-find but oh-so-worth-it gallery in Ballentine. It’s called Our Hands Together, and as the name implies, many hands have made many wonderful things at this intriguing little shop. It’s located at 101 Ballentine Park Road, which is off Highway 6 (Dreher Shoals Road) just before the intersection of Highway 76 (Dutch Fork Road) in Ballentine. Look for their colorful little signs out on Dreher Shoals. It’s really a fun place to shop! Visit the Our Hands Together website for more.

2:00-6:00 pm

Since 1976, The Little Gym has fostered experiential learning through physical programs that provide opportunities for kids to explore their own potential and to better understand and enjoy the world around them. Since the beginning, we have emphasized Serious Fun through a progressive curriculum, in which each success builds off the last. All of our programs are divided into themed, multi-week Learning Units that lead to a natural progression of skills throughout our Core Season, into our Summer Session and from one year to the next. The coordination and confidence that enable your baby to first crawl across the mat, lay the foundation to master a somersault at age three, try a handspring at age six, and assert leadership skills both in the gym and throughout the community. Our open houses help parents to assess our facilities, our instructors and our programs. Please stop by one of our gyms during Open House and we’ll show you around! The Little Gym website.

Lake Murray Real Estate Update 08-16-2011

A Community Service Cruise on Lake Murray –The Lake Murray Power Squadron is hosting residents of the Thornwell Children’s Home for a two hour cruise on beautiful Lake Murray. This event will take place August 27 from noon until 2p.m. aboard the Southern Patriot. 80 residents and their chaperones will be treated to a free cruise on the lake with lunch, drinks and dessert provided. There is lots of help from the community to make sure these kids have a great time on the water. The Bi-Lo store of Chapin is providing a box lunch and soda for all the guests and crew aboard for the cruise. This is a very nice contribution so please remember to thank them next time you are shopping there. The boat is being provided at no cost by Lake Tours, Inc. owned by Joy Downs and her son Jay. We can’t thank them enough for their generosity and support. Captain Mike Kirk of the Lake Murray Power Squadron will be at the helm for this event. At the first mention of the idea for this cruise, he had squadron members fighting each other to help crew the boat and also help with the many other things that need to be done. Dessert, coolers of ice, photography work and special surprises for the kids have all been arranged. Many thanks to all who are making this dream possible. The Thornwell Home for Children in Clinton provides a solid and stable home for children who are abandoned, abused or neglected. Many of these kids are getting the proper help there to become productive members of our community. This is very important work and we all applaud their efforts. Many of these kids would never otherwise have the chance for a day of fun on the water. We all want to give them that day and give back to the community that has given us all so much.

Sheriff’s dive team attains advanced certification – The Lexington County Sheriff’s Department Dive Team is the first law enforcement agency in the Midlands to attain certification in the Law Enforcement Diver Phase III course. Lexington County Sheriff James R. Metts said Dive Team members attained certification by demonstrating proficiency in performing emergency rescue diving, recovering evidence underwater, using metal detectors underwater and diving at night and in conditions in which visibility is limited. Divers also showed proficiency in using a compass to navigate underwater. Law Enforcement Rescue Specialists conducted Law Enforcement Diver Phase III training for the Dive Team, Metts said. The Georgetown County Sheriff’s Office Dive Team is the only other dive team in South Carolina to attain Law Enforcement Diver Phase III certification. Dive Team members practiced techniques learned during the Law Enforcement Diver Phase III training course July 26 on Lake Murray near Sandy Beach at Bundrick Island.
