Off the Wall: Columbia City Ballet

Friday September 30, 2011 – Sunday October 2, 2011

Columbia City Ballet’s William Starrett’s Off the Wall & Onto the Stage translates South Carolina artist Jonathan Green’s extraordinary images to the contemporary stage in a visionary return to classical ballet’s blending of dance, music and fine art. Comprised of a series of vignettes drawn directly from 22 of Jonathan’s energetic paintings, William’s production explores the dynamics and inner meanings of the paintings. The costumes, the landscapes and the people in Jonathan’s works literally come to life in dance set to music rooted in the history of the region, including gospel, jazz, folk songs and hymns. This unique commingling of the arts is an exhilarating testament to the lively, multi-cultural reality of the South, and one with real significance for America and the world.

Performed at the Koger Center – Tickets on sale at Capitol Tickets! Purchase by phone at (803)251-2222 or online at www.capitoltickets.com.

This classic musical’s timeless tunes – “Some Enchanted Evening,” “I’m Gonna Wash That Man Right Out Of My Hair” and “Bali Ha’i,” – alone are worth the price of admission. Anything Goes: Workshop Theatre

LAST WEEK! Now – October 1. 2011

It’s anchors aweigh for mirth, mischief and music as Anything Goes sails on now to October 1. Sponsored by Blue Cross / Blue Shield of South Carolina, the comedy of lovers and liars on a 1930s ocean cruise launches Workshop Theatre’s 44th season.
It’s a tale of boy-meets-girl in triplicate and the comic complications that ensue. All the deceptions and romances get sorted out and disaster averted aboard a ship where magic and deception rule, ensuring that “anything goes.” The hijinks on the high seas unwind amid Cole Porter classics — a blend of toe-tapping rousers and sophisticated ballads like “I Get a Kick Out of You,” “You’re the Top,” “Blow Gabriel Blow,” “It’s De-Lovely,” “Friendship,” “Easy to Love” and “All Through the Night,” as well as the title song. Times have changed, as Porter suggests, but Anything Goes is still tops in entertainment. To paraphrase his urbane, witty lyrics, the voyage on our stage promises to be “de-wonderful” for everyone.
Visit Workshop’s website for all the info!

The huge unfinished area over the two car garage could be a private retreat for guests, in-laws or a “man cave.”

View the virtual tour for this home here

All floors on the main level of the home are reclaimed heart pine and the ceilings are ten feet with the exception of the soaring vaulted ceiling in the great room, breakfast room and screened porch. There is heavy molding and trimwork throughout. Ashley Norton hardware, custom designed lighting, marble countertops in the kitchen and unique tile work are hallmarks of design.

With many windows and doors, the home is bring and airy. The formal dining room is conveniently located adjacent to the kitchen and the foyer. The windowed breakfast room affords views of the lake and French doors open to the screened porch and the deck overlooking the lake. The beaded board ceiling is enhanced with huge beams which are echoed in the kitchen and great room.

The kitchen is a gourmand’s delight: marble countertops, Wolf oven and Wolf gas cook top with six burners, a custom designed tile backsplash, a heart pine island with Ipe countertop and bar, a vegetable sink, sub zero refrigerator with freezer drawers, Kitchenaide dishwasher, Insinkerator disposal, wine chiller, and Grohe faucet. It is open to the windowed great room with spacious vaulted ceiling and a masonry fireplace (with piped gas line) which is flanked by cabinets loaded with shelves for books, decorative items, storage and TV/entertainment outlets/hookups.

All doors on the main level are eight feet, solid doors and the ceilings are 10 feet. The ceilings on the lower level are 9’ 4 1/2” and the doors are 6’8”.

The master bedroom suite, on the main level, has French doors leading to the screened porch and the lake. Plantation shutters are installed throughout the master suite. The master bath features tumbled tile counter tops with raised bowl vanities, pendant lighting, a stand-alone porcelain tub and a separate walk-in showr with a seat and many shower heads. The shower is completely tiled from floor to ceiling including the ceiling. There is a private water closet with built-in wall cabinets.

The screened porch with vaulted ceiling and ceiling fan has a closet for lake entertaining. The porch opens to the deck and stairs to the lake.

The lower level is finished to enjoy lake living. There is extensive use of tile flooring in the traffic areas and laundry. There are two bedroom suites. The main hallway is enhanced by sunlight through windows and French doors which open to a covered brick patio area and to the lake. The laundry room is finished with a drain in the tile floor, a laundry sink and many built-in cabinets.

There is a large windowed recreation room with French doors that open onto the patio and lake. All windows afford a lakeview. There is a masonry fireplace (with a gas line hookup) which is flanked by cabinets on each side. Off of the recreation/exercise room is a kitchenette with heartpine counter tops, a porcelain sink with a window above it and many cabinets.

The second bedroom suite consists of a huge bedroom (now used as a hobby/sewing room) with glass doors that open to the patio and lake. A private bath and walk-in closet complete the suite.

The two car garage which is attached by an attractive brick breezeway is finished with paneled walls and attractively painted. It has built-in shelves, automatic openers, fluorescent lighting, and closet for water treatment system.

There is extensive brick work in addition to the foundation of the home. Several brick stairways lead to the different areas of the yard from the raised brick patio and large arched walkways lead to the patio area. A covered brick breezeway connects the house to the garage.

The large yard is professionally landscaped with a lush green lawn and many attractive plants plus a raised vegetable garden. The lot is graded and equipped with drains so the water drains to the lake. The Ipe dock is built with seating on each side the length of the pier to the floating docks.

The roof is a metal roof complete with matching gutters. The siding is Hardy Plank, the bricks are Old Carolina Handmades. The windows are Pella Architect Series and the window trim is PVC. Lexington Irmo Lake Murray Real Estate Update 09-23-2011

Cayce Bluegrass Festival Oct. 1 – The City of Cayce presents the Congaree Bluegrass Festival Saturday, Oct. 1 from 11a.m. – 7p.m. at Granby Gardens Park in Cayce. The Cayce Events Committee is very excited to announce that headlining this year’s event is Steep Canyon Rangers. The day long festival will also include performances by The Carolina Rebels, New Dixie Storm and Sugarloaf Mountain Boys. In addition to the musical performances, the annual event will feature food and craft vendors, the Capital City Cloggers will perform and there will be a children’s play area with a bounce house and an obstacle course. The festival is free to the public, except for food and drinks. Coolers and pets are not permitted at the Congaree Bluegrass Festival, but lawn chairs are welcomed.

Lexington Senior and Leisure Center ribbon cutting Sept. 26 – A ribbon cutting ceremony scheduled for the newly expanded and renovated Lexington Senior and Leisure Center is set for 10a.m. Monday, Sept. 26. An open house is set for 11a.m. to 2p.m. Friday, Sept. 30. Lexington Leisure Center Complex is located at 108 Park St. in Lexington.

Lexington extends development incentive – Lexington town leaders are extending incentives they hope will encourage development in the town. Town Council agreed to keep a plan in place that allows developers to buy single sewer taps instead of purchasing them in kits of 10. The extension will be in place until February 2012. “It is still difficult to get funding for development” assistant town administrator Stuart Ford said. “There have been few new housing developments started in Lexington in the past three years.” By dropping the 10 purchase minimum, it allows developers to buy one sewer tap, if that’s all they need, he said. In town sewer taps cost $1,900 and that’s easier to pay than the $19,000 it would take to buy 10 taps, Ford said.

Shut Up Little Man! An Audio Misadventure: Nickelodeon Theatre

Friday September 23, 2011 – Saturday September 24, 2011

I was little concerned about making this a Top Ten pick, since it sounds like a torturous bit of “entertainment”. But it gets high reviews and who am I to question Robert De Niro in his choice of films? Tribeca Film, the distribution initiative from De Niro and Jane Rosenthal, brings you the story of this 90’s pop culture sensation in SHUT UP LITTLE MAN! AN AUDIO MISADVENTURE. The phenomenon began in 1987 when Eddie and Mitch (two young punks from the Mid West), moved next door to Peter Haskett (a flamboyant gay man), and Raymond Huffman (a raging homophobe). This ultimate odd-couple hated each other with raging abandon, and through the paper-thin walls their alcohol-fuelled rants terrorized Eddie and Mitch. Fearing for their lives they began to tape record evidence of the insane goings on from next door. In recording Pete and Ray’s unique dialogue, the boys accidently create one of the world’s first ‘viral’ pop-culture sensations.

Anything Goes: Workshop Theatre

Lexington Irmo Lake Murray Real Estate Update 09-16-2011

Corley Mill Road Traffic Plan to Cost $2 Million – A quick fix of Corley Mill Road traffic problems will cost about $2 million. That’s the estimate of state engineers. Residential development on scenic Corley Mill Road has increased traffic for several years. The opening of three Lexington 1 schools in that area adds to the problem said Sen. Jake Knotts. His constituents who live there are upset about it, Knotts said after a Dept. of Transportation presentation last week. DOT engineers have come up with a plan for a traffic circle at Rivechase Way and Corley Mill to speed traffic flow there and on U.S. 378. The plan would reroute Corley Mill Road at the traffic circle sending traffic one block west then curving south to meet U.S. 378 at the Northside Road traffic light. A section of Corley Mill Road for Riverchase to U.S. 378 would then be closed. This is designed to divert Corley Mill and Riverchase traffic from the light shared with Ginny Lane. Local businesses and Lexington Dist. 1’s new middle and elementary schools will send a high traffic flow into U.S. 378. Because no Lex. County, state nor federal money is available, DOT planner Depak Patel said the school district has offered to help with the anticipated $2 million cost. “Although the district is not in the road building business, we are willing to partner with the Dept. of Transportation and the Central Midlands Council of Governments to find a solution,” said Lexington 1 spokeswoman Mary Beth Hill. She said the district is awaiting an official project budget and time table. “Until we see those, we don’t know what the project will actually cost,” she said. Patel estimated it will take two years to build the traffic circle in time for the August 2013 opening of the new River Bluff High School with 1,500 to 2,000 students. He said Lexington 1 plans to change area school opening and closing times to avoid conflict with already heavy rush hour traffic. A long-range plan, Patel said, may be to widen Corley Mill to four lanes and U.S. 378 to seven lanes. He said there is no cost estimate for that.

Rivalry Raises Money for Meals on Wheels – Lexington County Recreation and Aging Commission (LCRAC) is banking on an age old rivalry to help raise funds for the Meals on Wheels program. Adirondack chairs painted by artist, Mary Beth Callais, featuring the Clemson University logo and the University of South Carolina logo will become the property of some lucky fan on November 5 in a drawing at the Shoppes of Flight Deck. (Ticket holders do not have to be present to win.) Tickets are currently available and can be acquired at any of the seven Lexington County Senior centers or by calling 802-356-5111. Donations are $3 per ticket or 4 tickets for $10. The chairs will be on display the week of September 19-23 at the Lexington Wellness Center and the week of September 26-30 at the Lexington Senior Center located at 108 Park Road. Tickers will be available at both locations. The Meals on Wheels Program meets the nutritional needs of approximately 1,250 senior individuals throughout Lexington County and last year provided more than 144,000 meals to Lexington County seniors.
