Saturday, January 23. Flatland Express! Bill’s Pickin’ Parlor brings yet another awesome performer to the stage on Saturday night! From the flatlands of South Carolina has emerged a dynamic Bluegrass group called Flatland Express. The five member band have been busting down the doors of local venues with their captivating harmony and tantalizing instrumentation. The band enliven their audiences with both traditional and non-traditional Bluegrass, Gospel, as well as stimulating re-compositions of older 60′s and 70′s music. Come out and see what Flatland Express is all about and you will agree they are truly an extraordinary assemblage with music that will appeal to Bluegrass and non-bluegrass fans alike. Visit Bill’s Music Shop & Pickin’ Parlor for more information.

Saturday, January 23. Belly Dancers! After last year’s infamous Bellydance All-Star Show at Art Bar (with four top acts, 350 spectators standing on barstools and hanging from the rafters, and an accordion-filled after party that lasted until dawn), they’re doing it all over again! Columbia Alternacirque is trying to raise money for their upcoming circus season and for their eventual goal of opening a studio and Art Bar is throwing open its doors and welcoming bellydancers and circus performers from across the southeast and eastern seaboard. $5 cover. Opening Friday, January 15. The Odd Couple. What begins as an “ordinary” Friday night poker game dissolves into an incredibly hilarious saga centered on Oscar Madison and Felix Unger. Oscar barely minds that his wife has divorced him because it allows him to host these Friday night poker games AND he never has to clean his apartment. Felix, a newscaster and fuss-budgety cleaning fanatic, becomes the friend-in-need as he is newly separated from his wife. So, good old Oscar takes in poor old Felix and this mismatched duo become the “odd couple.” Visit Town Theatre for additional information and show times.

Saturday, January 16. Museum Roadshow. Want to know more about your great grandmother’s silver or that chair purchased from an antique store? Curious guests will have their chance at the State Museum during its annual “Museum Road Show” this Saturday. Inspired by PBS’ “Antiques Roadshow,” the program will offer informal (verbal) appraisals of a variety of objects. Museum curators and local experts will be on hand not only to discuss items, but also to provide tips on caring for the objects. Experts Include: Ed Albrittion (books), Dr. Jack Meyer (coins, currency, military weapons and objects conservator), Dr. Rodger E. Sunday, January 17. Art of Music: A Sacred Harp Gathering. Experience the magic of this interactive performance! This Art of Music series event is not a concert, but a convergence: visitors can sing along in the communal shape-note singing tradition. Sacred Harp is a unique American tradition that brings communities together to sing four-part hymns and anthems. Robert Kelley, professor of music at Lander University, organizes a group of regional singers, and adjunct curator of music Dr. Peter Hoyt, discusses the historic significance of this idiom at 3:00 p.m. Cost is free courtesy BlueCross BlueShield of SC. Visit the Columbia Museum of Art for more information.

Sunday January 17. Visit the Arboretum. Tucked away in a quiet inner city neighborhood is one of Columbia’s most special places: the University of South Carolina’s Belser Arboretum. It’s located east of Shandon in the Sherwood Forest neighborhood. This seven-acre tract has a long looping trail which makes the whole place accessible. Covered in wooden chips, the path goes uphill and downhill. It crosses a small wooden bridge, as well as a stream with four waterfalls. In the valley, there’s a Zen garden with rock piles suggestive of a miniature Stonehenge. Volunteers have put up dozens and dozens of unobtrusive tags and plaques explaining it all. Unlike city parks, the arboretum is not generally open to the public. But on the third Sunday of every month, it opens its doors to the public for three hours. What a nice way to spend a Sunday afternoon! Visit the Arboretum for additional information.

Tuesday, January 19. Winter Performing Art Series. The Cultural Council of Richland and Lexington Counties and the City of Forest Acres present a free, family friendly, fun winter concert series at Columbia Children’s Theatre. The concert series begins this Tuesday with featured guitarist John English. Performances begin at 7 p.m. and will last about one hour. Performance genres include jazz, classical guitar, opera, saxophone, and piano, as well as surprises from a local magician and storyteller. The Columbia Children’s Theatre is located at the Midtown at Forest acres (The corner of Forest Dr. and Beltline). Visit Smart Arts for additional information.

Thursday, January 21. Shag Night at Jillian’s. The great live music and shagging continues inside Jillian’s this Thursday from 6PM-9PM featuring one of the southeast’s best Beach and variety dance bands for your dancing and entertainment pleasure. This week Band of Oz will be performing. Free admission and special drink prices. For more information visit Shag Jillian’s.

Lexington Columbia Irmo Christmas Lights on Display

Lexington Columbia Irmo Christmas Lights on Display

There was a great article in The State newspaper today about some of the area Christmas light displays around Irmo, Columbia, and Lexington today.  It just so happened that I was headed out this evening with the family to check out a few of the ones listed in the article.  In this area, there really are some great activities to get you in the Holiday mood.  Not only are there some great light displays, but some great events like the Vista Lights, which kicks off the season each November, and The Holiday Market, organized by the Junior League of Columbia as a fundraiser to allow them to support local charities in the Columbia SC area.  My kids especially enjoyed seeing the lights tonight at the Saluda Shoals park and the homes on Hope Ferry Road.  Total cost for entrance was 10.00 and it was a great way to spend a few hours !

Some popular area attractions include the Lights Before Christmas at Riverbanks Zoo and Garden.  This beloved annual event with nearly a million twinkling lights and more than 350 handcrafted images includes photos with Santa, Jingle Bell bonfire marshmallow roast and snow!  It runs nightly from 6-9p.m. through Jan. 3 (closed Dec. 24, 25 & 31) and costs $8 or $6 for ages 3-12.

Another attraction is the Saluda Shoals Holiday Light on the River and a special event called the Nights of Wonder which runs through Dec. 23 from 6-10p.m.  Children can take part in a hayride, roast marshmellows, ride the train,  slide down the Winter Wonder ride, and visit with Santa.  Admission to the Lights on the River is $10 for cars with a nominal fee for the crafts and concessions.

Home displays include several homes in the Hope Ferry Road neighborhood of Lexington SC; and 108 May Morning Drive in the Spring Lake subdivision.  In the Harbison/St. Andrews area at 258 Piney Grove Road the display includes a nativity, Christmas trees, large  inflatable Frosty, Mr. and Mrs. Claus and more.  In Gaston at 5320 U.S. 321 there are more than 15,000 lights plus other decorations; and in Cayce/West Columbia SC there are 3 elaborate displays, 1616 Pine St. (Twilight Manor); 509 Moss Creek Drive and 302 Hudson Street in West Columbia. The families decorating these homes are truly into the spirit of the holidays.  runs throughDec. 23 from 6-10p.m.
