Columbia SC Weekend Activities 9-10-2010


Bar Stool Classic

Putt your way through Five Points during the second annual Bar Stool Classic, happening this evening from 5-9 p.m. Guests will get a score card and will make their way through the bars playing mini golf, competing for goodies and enjoying beer specials. First place nets $500. Register for $15 at the Five Points Fountain starting at 4 p.m. Proceeds benefit the Babcock Center Foundation.


To market, to market

Main Street Marketplace continues Friday on Boyd Plaza. City Center Partnership’s open-air market includes fresh fruits and veggies, handcrafts, artwork, baked goods and more. It takes place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. every Friday until the end of October at the corner of Main and Hampton streets. Party in Pine Ridge

The annual Pine Ridge Neighborhood Festival begins Friday at 6 p.m. Enjoy music, food, carnival rides and a turkey shoot, and cap it off by watching the fireworks display at 9 p.m. Come back on Saturday for a 9 a.m. parade followed by more activities at 10 a.m. To participate in the parade, in the car show or as a vendor, call 803-755-2500.



Strolling the city

If you need a fun dose of history, stop in at the Robert Mills Historic District on Friday for a guided tour by Historic Columbia Foundation. Check out the distinctive architectural features of of some of Columbia’s oldest homes and learn more about the city’s past. The tour starts at 1 p.m.; get the $6 tour tickets at the museum shop at the Robert Mills House, 1616 Blanding St. For information, call 803-252-1770, ext. 24, or send an e-mail.


Music at the museum

Enjoy a cash bar and live music this evening beginning at 7 p.m. at the Columbia Museum of Art as American folk artist and critically acclaimed singer-songwriter Richard Buckner takes the stage to perform, including songs from his latest album, Meadow. S.C. native Mac Leaphart, whose 2008 release Line, Rope, Etc. earned him accolades, opens the concert. Tickets are $9, $7 for museum members. Get them online.


Bridal showcase

Columbia Bridal Associates’ Fall Bridal Showcase takes place Sunday. Check out this season’s latest fashions and get some ideas of your own at the show, which runs from 1-4 p.m. at the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center. Admission is $7. Call 803-739-9052 for more information.




EdVenturous Grandparents Day

Sunday at EdVenture children’s museum, grandparents get in for no charge when accompanied by a grandchild. Spend quality time with the youngsters while building photo frames for the family in the museum’s Aha Factory. Go online or call 803-779-3100 for more information.


Future PGA stars?

Get out this weekend and enjoy some golf. The 2010 Woodcreek Classic, part of the NGA Hooters Tour, began on Labor Day and will continue this weekend at the Members Club at Woodcreek in Elgin. The second round is on Friday, the third round on Saturday and the final round is Sunday. The first tee time is 7:30 a.m. daily. Admission is open to the public and there’s no charge to watch.


Another 525,600 minutes

Back by popular demand, Rent premieres Friday night at Trustus Theatre. If you’re not familiar with Jonathan Larson’s Pulitzer-nabbing musical, it’s based on Puccini’s La Boheme. It chronicles a year in the life of eight friends living Bohemian life in New York City’s East Village. Catch it Thursdays through Sundays through Oct. 2. Get lost

On Saturday, the Clinton Sease Farm’s corn maze in Lexington opens for the season. Challenge yourself in the full-sized maze, relax and visit the kiddie maze, cool off in the mist maze or try the marshmallow maze. Admission is $10 per person. The maze is open Fridays 6-11 p.m., Saturdays 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. and Sundays 2-7 p.m. Call 803-730-2863 for information. Clinton Sease Farm is at 404 Olde Farm Road.

Greek festival: Sept. 16-19 at the corner of Sumter and Calhoun streets. Enjoy Columbia’s 24th annual edition of the dining, dancing and cultural event.

Lake Carolina Wine and Food Festival: Noon to 7 p.m. Sept. 25, followed by a VIP after-party from 7-10 p.m.

Columbia Blues Festival: Oct. 1-2. The 16th annual festival will be held at Martin Luther King Jr. Park in Five Points. The event begins at noon each day.

Third annual Italian Festival: 11 a.m.-9 p.m. Oct. 2. Celebrate with the Sons of Italy Lodge 2808 in downtown Columbia on Main Street for a fun-filled festival.
