Lexington Irmo Lake Murray Real Estate Update 9-10-2010

Honor flight pays tribute to our heroes It was unexpected, this outpouring of affection. For veterans who had not seen anything like this since the war ended in 1945, this made it all the sweeter. Men and women of the Greatest Generation came to Columbia Metropolitan Airport at 6a.m. Wednesday, September 1. They were guests of Honor Flight on an exciting visit to Washington. They were Moffatt Burriss of Lexington, a veteran of the Allied campaigns in North Africa, Sicily, Italy and Belgium, with his son John. Marion Hughes of West Columbia, winner of 3 bronze stars for bravery. Richard Trott of Lexington a Marine who stormed the beaches at Iwo Jima under enemy fire. Clarence “Sandy” Sanders of Lexington who played football for Coach Rex Enright of USC. Ellen Lesesen of Lexington, one of three female WWII vets. Landing at Reagan National Airport in Washington, they were greeted by enthusiastic supporters waving flags along the runway and in the terminal. Crowded into a chartered US Airways jet were 96 veterans plus 84 guardians and volunteers including Bill Dukes, who has guided all eight Honor Flights from here with donations. The donations cover the $60,000 cost of each flight so the veterans go free. The veterans visited the World War II, Vietnam, Korea, Iwo Jim and Air Force monuments and the Women in Military Museum.

9-11 steel comes to Lexington – World Trade Center beams to form memorial. South Carolinians and New Yorkers have united to remember those who perished on September 11, 2001. Next year on the 10th anniversary of that tragic day, the unity will continue when a “Lexington County First responders Wall of Remembrance Forever” memorial is unveiled using two pieces of steel recovered from World Trade Center Tower One. Brooklyn native Dan Hennigan, who lives on Lake Murray, returned to New York City on Sept. 5 with three SC firefighters. They were to return Wednesday, with two steel beams. The Lexington County memorial will remember all first responders from the SC Midlands’ community that died in the line of duty, including police, fire, emergency medical personnel and troopers.

OktoberFest – September 17 & 18 at Virginia Hylton Park – Join us as we celebrate Lexington’s German history. OktoberFest celebrations are held all over the country and emphasize German heritage. The Lexington community has a strong German influence and OktoberFest will be celebrating our history with German Food and family fun.

Legend of the Fall – For Phil Strickland, it’s just another game. Friday’s contest between Newberry and Batesburg-Leesville will be just another chance for Strickland to patrol the sideline and possibly add to his already impressive win total. “This game isn’t about me” Strickland said. “We’re preparing to go down and win a football game”. But, for those in the Batesburg-Leesville area, this is more than just another game. Strickland has done quite a bit of winding during his years including the past seven seasons at Gaffney High School. Strickland spent 11 seasons as B-L’s head coach, racking up 119 wins and two state championships.
