Play With Your City

Head to the Nelson Mullins rooftop on Friday at 6 p.m. for the finale of the Play With Your City public art competition from of the Columbia Design League and the Columbia Museum of Art. Three finalists will present their proposals and respond to questions from New York writer, editor and blogger Teri Tynes in hopes of receiving the ultimate score: funding. Admission is $5; no charge for league members.


Come out and celebrate Lexington’s German history at the inaugural Oktoberfest celebration this Friday and Saturday. Enjoy live music, German food and beer, carnival, crafts, a parade and more. In addition, the event includes a golf tournament, 5K race, bass tournament and art show. Visit the website for a complete schedule of events.


Schoolhouse Rock

The catchy, clever and educational cartoon series comes to life at the Columbia Children’s Theater starting this weekend. Featuring favorites such as Just a Bill, Conjunction Junction and Interjections, the show lets kids know that learning can be a foot-stomping good time. Shows are at 7 p.m. Friday; 10:30 a.m., 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. Saturday; and on 3 p.m. Sunday. Purchase tickets online.

Greek Festival

The 24th annual edition of Columbia’s Greek Festival begins today at the corner of Sumter and Calhoun streets. Stop by and enjoy Greek cuisine, dancing, live music, church tours and stories of Greek heritage and culture. It’s happening from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. through Saturday and noon to 8 p.m. Sunday. Columbia night ride

The second annual Vista Charity Night Owl Ride & Run/Walk starts Friday night and carries on into the wee hours of the morning. The 12-hour cycling event follows a course across the Gervais Street Bridge in the heart of the Vista between Columbia and West Columbia. Ride one lap, ride more and enjoy a massage, or ride all night and enjoy breakfast on Saturday morning. Registration begins 6:30 p.m. Friday at 300 Senate St. Go online for information.


Blue Man Group

Sunday is the last day to participate in the Blue Man Group – Making Waves exhibit at EdVenture children’s museum. The musical Blue Men are your guide as you play their unique instruments over the surround sound system and learn about sound and light in the 1,500-square-foot exhibit. Separation Saturday

In a weekend of college football when the good teams distinguish themselves from the pack by winning a third straight game, the Gamecocks will face the Furman Paladins at Williams Brice Stadium. on Saturday at 7 p.m. See if freshman running back Marcus Lattimore can repeat his performance from last weekend against the Paladins, who enjoyed a 30-point victory last week against Colgate University.


A classic

The Town Theatre has kicked off its 92nd season with the musical Gypsy, the story of a mother whose quiet, obedient little girl grows up to become the famous stripper Gypsy Rose Lee. Shows run at 8 p.m. tonight through Saturday and at 3 p.m. Sunday. Admission is $12-18. Go online for more information.

Art Exhibit

Starting today, you can see a unique art exhibit featuring the work of Amanda Ladymon at ART+CAYCE. And from 5 to 7 p.m. today, you can see the exhibit and enjoy a reception. Ladymon received her master’s in fine arts from the University of South Carolina in 2009 and has been inspired by the local environment and ecosystems in creating what are described as biomorphically abstract works. The exhibit runs through Sept 30 at 1329 State St. in Cayce.

Calling all responsible dog owners

The Humane Society and the American Kennel Club are hosting an event in honor of Responsible Dog Ownership Day on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at North Springs Park. An obedience and agility performance will be provided by Bridlewood Danes, and a therapy and police K-9 demonstration will be given by the Richland County Sheriff’s Department. There will also be presentations concerning dog safety for kids and breed-specific information.

Celebrate fall: Rudy Mancke, the University of South Carolina’s naturalist-in-residence, will talk about the natural changes that take place during the fall on Tuesday at noon on the USC Horseshoe in front of the McKissick Museum (or indoors, depending on weather). Bring blankets and picnic lunches. There’s no charge and it’s open to the public.

Viva la Vista: 2-7 p.m. Sept. 25, featuring live music and tastings from restaurants in the Vista.

Lake Carolina Wine and Food Festival: Noon to 7 p.m. Sept. 25, followed by a VIP after-party from 7-10 p.m.

Columbia Blues Festival: Oct. 1-2. The 16th annual festival will be held at Martin Luther King Jr. Park in Five Points. The event begins at noon each day.

Third annual Italian Festival: 11 a.m.-9 p.m. Oct. 2. Celebrate with the Sons of Italy Lodge 2808 in downtown Columbia on Main Street.
