Lawmakers see tough decisions ahead

Five key lawmakers who spoke at the Business Report’s Power Breakfast this morning say they see difficult decisions ahead this year at the Statehouse, but they also find reason to hope for greater cooperation with a new governor.

Under new bill, universities would post all spending

A measure backed by House Speaker Bobby Harrell would post every dollar of university spending prominently on the Internet. After the measure lost steam last session amid questions about the details, university leaders are now on board with the plan.

Nearly 20% of state’s Q3 home sales were foreclosures

A quarterly report on the sales of distressed homes in South Carolina also showed a 27% discount in pricing, which was slightly below the national average of 32%. Nearly every large market in the state saw a decline in the number of sales of distressed properties compared with the previous quarter.

Carolina Medcare settles Medicare fraud allegations

The government alleged that Carolina Medcare, a provider of non-emergent transportation, submitted claims with forged physicians’ signatures, altered dates or the signatures of unqualified people.

South University dedicates new pharmacy building

The School of Pharmacy at the Columbia campus will be the school’s second pharmacy campus in the United States, offering the same three-year accelerated Doctor of Pharmacy program that it has offered in Savannah since 2002.

Harry Cato to advise Nelson Mullins clients

Former S.C. House Speaker Pro Tem Harry F. Cato has contracted with Nelson Mullins to advise the firm’s government relations clients and expand its practice.

Midlands Tech opens Harbison campus buildings

Midlands Technical College held a ribbon-cutting ceremony Wednesday for its Harbison Campus theater and classroom building. The 27,000-square-foot facility includes five classrooms and a 400-seat theater.
