Lake Murray Real Estate Update 12-02-2010

Crested Floating Heart a potential aquatic weed threat – Lake Murray users, please be on the lookout for this weed. It originated in Asia, but is similar in appearance to the native aquatic plant, big floating heart or banana lily (Nymphoides aquatic). It is invasive and can quickly take over waterways. It has been an aquatic problem in Florida for the past 15 years. Closer to home it was first found as a small colony in Lake Marion in 2004. The most recent survey identified approximately 2000 acres that are presently infested there. Crested floating heart has a single heart-shaped highly pigmented leaf. Slender tuberous roots dangle from the stem leaf node. The plants have ruffled, crested white flowers with membranous margins. Plants spread by roots breaking from clusters and sinking to the lake bottom where new plants originate. Experts familiar with the problem in the Santee Cooper lakes feel there is a potential for up to 60,000 surface acres to become infested. It is capable of rooting along shorelines in water 10 to 12 feet in depth. It has been observed to spread upstream from water flow, indicating that it can spread by attaching to boat hulls. Herbicide treatments have been unsatisfactory for controlling it and grass carp will not eat it.

Remove yard debris before lake rises – Each year we enjoy the beautiful foliage that the season brings. This year the fall colors were not double spectacular, especially in the undeveloped ravine sections of the lake. But as the winter sets in, thousands of lake residents face the task of clean up. Many residents choose to collect debris at the water’s edge with the intention of burning the refuse when conditions are more favorable or simply wait for the water to rise so wind and wave will wash their “problems” away. And with the new burning ban in Lexington county, some residents may be encouraged to use wave and wind action rather than bagging and hauling off the refuse.
