Lexington Irmo Lake Murray Real Estate Update 01-03-2011

Newsmaker of the Year – Gov. elect Nikki Haley has been named the 2010 Newsmaker of the Year by the editors at the Chronicle. The Lexington County legislator came from a distant fourth place in the Replublican polls to capture the nomination and the election with the help of a government transparency platform and the backing of political heavyweights including former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin.

School districts consider security changes – Florida shootings raise concerns – Lexington County school officials are considering if added security is needed at trustee meetings. Concerns arose after a mentally ill, 56 year old ex convict opened fire at a Panama City, Fla. School board meeting this month. No one was injured except the gunman who a security guard wounded. The gunman then killed himself. Assistant Superintendent Jim Hinton of Lexington School District 2 in the Cayce-Springdale-West Columbia area said his district has safety and emergency plans in place at all schools and facilities. “One part of these plans is dealing with a hostile intruder inside a district or school facility. Our district works with the local law enforcement agencies in preparing for such an event.”

Local restaurant feed homeless – Hudson’s Smokehouse fed more than 200 homeless people on Christmas Eve. This was the third year the local restaurant, owned and operated by Robin Hudson and his son, Clint, have fed the homeless. “We did it at the restaurant the last two years.” Clint Hudson said, “but it was so hard for churches to bus them to us we decided to take it to them.” The feeding was held at the City of Columbia Winter Shelter, 191 Calhoun Street. The Hudson’s served ham, turkey and all the fixings. “We want to thank everyone who donated winter clothing,” Hudson said. “Tripp’s Dry Cleaners donated hats and coats and one man brought 166 pairs of gloves.”
