Confirmation committee endorses Commerce nominee

Robert M. Hitt received the unanimous and enthusiastic endorsement of the Senate Labor, Commerce and Industry Committee this morning. The full Senate is expected to take up the nomination quickly, possibly today.

SCANA: Nuclear partner likely to cut expected use

Last year, Santee Cooper said it was considering a reduction in its usage of the new nuclear reactors in Fairfield County because of lower demand. The publicly owned utility has said it is re-evaluating its 45% stake in the project in Jenkinsville.

Local produce wholesaler nabs contract with military

West Columbia company Senn Brothers has received a $15.157 million contract to provide fresh fruits and vegetables to the military. The company is a wholesale distributor of a wide array of fresh fruits and vegetables, eggs, peanuts and other food products.

Jobs bill provides incentives for aircraft purchases

A new federal bill that passed on Dec. 17 will help people who purchase aircraft this year by providing extensive depreciation benefits for those people. An aviation account specialist said the move is spurring sales growth for new planes.

Savannah River National Lab engineer elected as Fellow

Michael Poirier of the U.S. Department of Energy’s facility in Aiken was elected a Fellow of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers. The rank of Fellow recognizes and honors members who have made meaningful contributions to the chemical engineering profession.

Company challenges clients to lose weight

Clarke & Co. Benefits LLC is sponsoring an eight-week weight loss challenge that runs through March 7. The challenge is intended to be a motivator to reduce people’s risk for chronic diseases and cut down on medical costs.
