Lexington Irmo Lake Murray Real Estate Update 02-04-2011

Lexington gives another nod to walking trails – Design of a new walking and jogging trail near Lexington is underway. Town Council approved spending $5,000 to develop the design for the 3,500 foot pathway along 14 Mile Creek. The plan is the first step in building the trail that will begin near S.C. 6 and Old Cherokee Road. With a design plan in place, the project could be ready for bids by April or May and construction beginning in June, said Dan Walker, town parks, streets and sanitation director. That could pave the way for the new path to be open by 2012, he said. The new design will try to keep the path out of wetlands and flood zone areas, Walker said. Getting the plan completed will also help nail down exact costs for the project. The current cost of completing the project is $161,000 to be paid with a $100,000 state grant, private donations and some funding from Lexington.

Lexington County cracks down on offenders DUI – Lexington County is not only one of the state’s most affluent and fastest growing area, it has one of the state’s worst records for driving under the influence. In 1.082 alcohol and drug related collisions in the county from 2007 to 2009, the latest complete years records are available. 83 people were killed and 548 were injured.

The state’s average 12.1DUI deaths per 100,000 people is almost twice the national average. Lexington ranks in the worst 12 among 46 counties in the state. Working with an $85,000 five year grant, law enforcement, school district and drug and alcohol officials and private citizens have launched an effort to reduce the carnage. The CAST (Community Action for a Safer Tomorrow) program has collected data to identify areas if highest DUI collisions. The area from I-26 north or Lake Murray, through Cayce, Lexington and West Columbia to Gaston, Pelion and Swansea are identified as the most dangerous. The most dangerous road in the county is I-26 near Harbison with 8% of the DUI collisions, followed by S.C. 6 with 5.5%, U.S. 1 with 5% and I-20 with more than 4%. “Rural roads are bad,” said Lexington County Sheriff’s Lt. Jim Crawford, “because there’s less law enforcement present. “2008 was the worst year ever with 60 fatalities.”

Lexington seeks to restore old Boozer home – Some Lexington residents want the town to save another piece of history. Members of the Historic Preservation and Review Board asked Town Council to restore the old Boozer home at 410 S. Church St. “There’s a lot of history in that house which was home to Sara Boozer, the state’s first female probate judge, said Chuck Corley, chairman of the review board. In addition, her son, George, helped write the town song, “Lexington – town of beautiful people.” The town already owns the home, which is across the street from the Palmetto Collegiate Institute, which was renovated several years ago.
