Animal Grossology Family Camp-In: South Carolina State Museum

Friday, April 1, 2011
Enjoy the “stinkiest, slimiest, grossest” sleepover ever!! First, campers will enjoy a screening of the original blockbuster movie “Shrek”. Campers may explore the museum galleries before and after the movie screening. A detailed schedule of activities will be provided at check-in. FOOD A light pizza snack will be served Friday evening. Muffins, fruit, juice and coffee will be provided Saturday morning.

Arts and Draughts: Columbia Museum of Art

The Greater Columbia Society for the Preservation of Soul DJs spin and the popular party band, The Capitol City Playboys take the stage for an evening of sheer musical entertainment. Tartan Day South: Historic Columbia Speedway

Friday April 1, 2011 – Saturday April 2, 2011
Friday Night kicks off at 6pm with a reception followed by a benefit dinner, whiskey tasting, auction & kilted fashion show at the Wingate by Wyndham, our host hotel. Saturday is a full day of activities taking place at the Historic Columbia Speedway in Cayce, SC. Featuring pipe bands, athletics, dancing, herding, falconry, storytelling, clan/society area, Celtic marketplace, British auto show, kids activities along with specialty foods and drink. A special highlight of the day will be the introduction of the newly formed ORDER OF THE FLAMING CABER. We are rather certain that this will be the first event in the US to showcase a flaming caber toss.

Columbia International Festival: SC State Fairgrounds

Saturday, April 2, 2011 – Sunday, April 3, 2011
The Columbia International Festival showcases the music, culture, food, and performing arts of the various cultures, nationalities, races, and language groups represented in South Carolina. The event brings all of the area’s international communities together to build better community/race relations between various ethnic/cultural/language groups and with the South Carolina community at large. This year’s theme: The French Connection. An indoor event attended by approximately 15,000 people in each year.

Carolina Cup: Springdale Race Course, Camden SC

The Carolina Cup race-meeting is a time honored South Carolina tradition that has achieved premier social event status. The annual ‘rites of spring’ draws over 65,000 fans from throughout the southeast, to enjoy the thrilling sport of steeplechase horse racing amid a flurry of spring fashions and elaborate tailgate parties. “Let’s Move!” Kids Day Columbia! At Finlay Park

The City of Columbia, Select Health of South Carolina and the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Midlands have teamed up to provide a day of fun and fitness at “Let’s Move!” Kids Day Columbia! at Finlay Park, 930 Laurel Street. The 19th annual event will promote First Lady Michelle Obama’s “Let’s Move!” initiative to combat childhood obesity, and promote making healthy choices, improving food quality in schools and physical activity. The festivities will kickoff on Friday at 6 p.m. with a family-friendly movie, amusements rides and food under the stars at Finlay Park. Admission and parking are FREE. On Saturday, a full day of fun, fitness and health screenings, a fun run, exhibits, healthy food tastings and much more!


Spring Concert Series: Village at Sandhills’ Town Center Commons

Village at Sandhill is pleased to once again provide the setting for some of the Columbia area’s finest musicians with its 2nd Annual Spring Concert Series. The four-week program continues this Sunday April 3 at 3pm with award-winning talent
Kevin McGee, a 2010 Nashville International Song and Lyric Writing competition winner of the Director’s Award, as well as other national honors. Kevin’s spirited blend of Rock ‘n Roll should make for a rollicking afternoon. Info here.

Kangaroo Crossing: EdVenture Children’s Museum

Enjoy a walkabout in Kangaroo Crossing! Try to jump as far as a kangaroo, shop for Vegemite, swim through the Great Barrier Reef, crawl through a life-size termite mound, learn about mysterious marsupials or listen to a school lesson in “the bush.” This kid friendly exhibition will introduce young minds to new, unique cultures of Australia. Urban Tour: Downtown Main Street Columbia

We’re usually in such a dad-blasted hurry to get from Point A to Point B, we seldom look at what’s around us. Do you really know what is downtown these days? Well, Urban Tour is a free event showcasing all that Columbia’s downtown has to offer. The self-guided walking tour includes special offers and give-aways from retailers, live entertainment such as street performers and musicians, local artists, a glimpse into downtown living, stories behind some of our historic buildings, food and discounted drinks all along the way. To help make it more fun and less hassle, free shuttle and horse carriage rides are available from 5:30p.m-9:00p.m to assist pedestrians. The event will take place rain or shine with the entertainment adaptable to street performances or inside designated buildings throughout the tour.

Five Points kicks off the Five After Five Concert Series this Thursday! Tootie and the Jones have been around for decades and have become known to many as “the hometown band”. Seen often at local events, festivals and of course, the Five After Five Concert series, these boys always bring an incredible crowd of loyal fans and friends. Robin Hood – A Somewhat True Tale: Columbia Children’s Theatre

A frantically funny, Monty Pythonesque retelling of the classic. This time around, the legendary legend, in his never-ending quest to aid the needy, encounters a lovely damsel-in-distress (oddly obsessed with skin conditions); an ever-scheming sheriff who would rather bowl a strike than hit a bulls eye; a gold-hoarding, bad-guy monarch wannabe; and a good-natured “Town’s Guy” who manages to make his way into every scene, whether he belongs there or not. Combine them with a band of spoon-wielding Merry Men whose collective IQs equal six, and you’ve got an irreverent jaunt through Sherwood Forest you won’t soon forget!

Lake Murray Dinner Cruise: Spirit of Lake Murray

One Eared Cow Glass
