Classical Conundrum: South Carolina Philharmonic

Experience Greater Columbia’s newest music venue! Music Director Morihiko Nakahara is excited about presenting the “Classical Conundrum” program inspired by hip-hop, pop, bluegrass, Middle-Eastern and gypsy music, among others. An all-SCP quintet faces West Columbia’s intimate new Conundrum Music Hall with a casual, eclectic concert. Doors open at 8 pm for the 9 pm concert. Barbeque and Bluegrass: Shealy’s BBQ and Haynes Auditorium in Batesburg Leesville

Take a ride out to Batesburg Leesville this Saturday. First stop by Shealy’s BBQ for some of South Carolina’s best Q, country veggies, fried chicken and homemade desserts. Then take in an electrifying bluegrass show at The Haynes. The show kicks off at 7PM with The New Bluegrass Gospel Connection. The second band of the night is Mike Dalton and Friends including Russell Franklin, Doug Swafford, and Joey Evans. Mike Dalton performed as a regular member of the Haynes 4th Sat Bluegrass Band while it was together. Also, come early for a jam session from 4:30 until 6:30 and open stage from 6:30 to 7. Touch a Truck: Lexington Farmers Market

What lights up a little boy (and many little girls) like it’s Christmas morning in July? A special Touch a Truck Event on Saturday, July 23rd from 8am-12pm at 116 E. Main St.! The event will include public safety and construction vehicles from multiple city and county safety departments.

Vest Fest: Virginia Hylton Park

Heroes Vest Fund uses public donations to purchase and donate body armor to K-9 Officers throughout South Carolina. Body armor for K-9’s is ‘optional’ equipment that is not provided through county or state funding. Their mission is to purchase and donate these vests to the K-9 Officers throughout the state. Join this organization and friends in adding the protection these dogs deserve by attending Vest Fest 2011, held this Saturday at Virginia Hylton Park in Lexington. Enjoy K-9 demonstrations, live music by 3 bands, fresh food provided by local eateries, and beer and wine provided by Sam’s Fine Wine & Spirits. Great prizes include a brand new car from Midlands Honda! The first 1,000 tickets sold hold a chance to win a brand new Honda at the event. Benefit for the Carter Strange Family: Mr. Friendly’s & Cellar on Greene

Mr. Friendly’s New Southern Café and sister restaurant, Cellar on Greene, will be hosting a charity night in honor of Carter Strange, a recent crime victim in Five Points, and his family on Monday, July 25th, 2011 from 5pm – 7pm. Tents will be set up outside in the parking lot between the two restaurants, where they will be selling beer, wine and light bites for the public to enjoy. 100% of the proceeds will go the family to help pay for Carter’s medical bills. The Five Points Rotary Club will also be on site collecting $10 donations for the beautiful Five Points Fountain Prints (8×12) and will also be donating 100% of the proceeds to the Strange Family.

Richland 101 For Kids: Dutch Square Center

Has your child ever climbed up inside a real fire truck? How about an ambulance? Is your child fascinated with animals and taking care of them? Curious about insects? Then bring them to Dutch Square Center on Thursday July 28 for Richland 101 for Kids. The theme of this summer’s workshop is “Navigating Your Way Through RIchland County” – a fun and educational youth program designed to teach students ages 6-12 about Richland County Government and the greater Midlands community. Students will learn about animal care, climb inside a real fire truck and ambulance, meet the 9ft deputy, and talk insects with the County’s Bug Man. This FREE one day youth event will be held on Thursday, July 28, 2011 from 9am to 1pm. Free lunch will be provided. Artwork from the 2011 Arts Arising program for the gifted and talented is now showing in the Bassett Gallery! It’s all about bugs and creepy crawly things! On Friday, July 22, Rock Candy will entertain at the Village at Sandhill Town Center with an 80’s rock and metal sound – these guys put on a great show and have a great time onstage; come enjoy a relaxing evening of music in Newberry’s Memorial Park on Friday evening at 7pm. Munson and Friends will perform. Finlay Park is the venue for Friday night’s screening of the film Space Chimps 2- Zartog Strikes Back and Lexington County Recreation will offer a showing of the animated hit “Rio” at Gibson Road Soccer Complex on Friday night. Saturday’s Concert in the Park at Finlay Park will feature Coolie G and Lion Soul (reggae).

Cinderella: Workshop Theatre

Join the folks in Pelion as they celebrate 30 years of partyin’ with the peanut and 100 years of great small town living in the Town of Pelion! The weekend kicks off Thursday night with an outdoor dance in the Smoak House Restaurant parking lot, featuring the Al G’s Roadhouse Band (7pm – 11pm). Festivities escalate on Friday for the 5 pm Blessing of the Pots (wherein the peanuts shall be boiled!), carnival rides, concessions, craft booths, a Peanutty cooking contest (get your entries to them by noon), and a 7pm show by Ten Toes Up – a Pawleys Island band with a sound combining funk, jazz and calypso. Saturday it’s an all day affair starting with a library book sale, the official Peanut Party Parade, amusement rides, crafters, live entertainment, but most of all – lovely, delicious, fantasmagorical BOILED PEANUTS!!
