Lexington Irmo Lake Murray Real Estate Update 07-22-2011

Filing for county-wide municipal elections begins – Voters in 10 Lexington County municipalities will be going to the polls to elect new leaders in November. Filing opens this month for general elections in Batesburg-Leesville, Chapin, Irmo, Lexington, Pelion, Pine Ridge, Springdale, Summit, Swansea and West Columbia. The terms of three mayors and 26 council members will expire this year. Candidates will file for the Nov. 8 election at the city or town hall in which they live. Summit candidates will file with the Lexington County Voter Registration and Elections office on West Main St. in Lexington. Batesburg-Leesville, Lexington and Summit candidates will file by petition which means they must collect petitions signed by 5% of the town’s registered voters. Filing opens Monday, July 25 in West Columbia, where the mayor and four council seats will be open. Filing closes August 12 and requires a $150 filing fee for mayor and $100 for council. In Irmo, filing opens August 12 and closes Sept. 2. The filing fee is $35. Petitions are due from Lexington candidates by Aug. 25. Candidates in the remaining towns and cities, Batesburg-Leesville, Chapin, Pelion, Pine Ridge, Springdale, Summit and Swansea will file between August 19 and Sept. 2. Filing fees are $25 for council members in Swansea; $30 in Pine Ridge and $10 in Pelion. Chapin, Summit, Lexington and Batesburg-Leesville do not charge filing fees.

Scavenger hunt marks Lexington’s 150th birthday – Lexington children can get a lesion in history and learn about town landmarks through a scavenger hunt. The 150th anniversary Historical Sites Scavenger Hunt will begin Saturday at the town’s farmer’s market. The hunt has been planned to showcase some of the town’s historical sites, said Jennifer Dowden, town events and media coordinator. “It will be a great way for children to learn about the town and its history,” she said. The hunt is part of the town’s 150th birthday celebration. It is open to school age children and limited to 150 participants. Children will have until September 2 to photograph town landmarks and submit their pictures. Landmarks to be visited include the Fox House, Gibson Pond overlook, veteran’s monument, Palmetto Collegiate Institute and more. All participants will receive small prizes.
