Bull Street sale close to completion, again Key issues have been resolved in the sale of the huge Bull Street property to a Greenville developer, according to an attorney for the S.C. Department of Mental Health. Proceeds from the sale are to benefit the agency’s clients. USC medical school aims to grow without state help University of South Carolina officials are in discussions with Palmetto Health to increase the number of medical students at the USC School of Medicine. The move would complement the agreement already in place for a second campus at Greenville Memorial Hospital.

Williamsburg County employee accused of embezzling Peggy Williams Singeltary, an administrative assistant with the Williamsburg County Water and Sewer Department, is accused of stealing more than $38,000. First responders memorial proposed – Columbia Metropolitan Airport Commissioners have received an ambitious proposal for a first responders memorial. Volunteer law enforcement, firefighters and other first responders said the memorial at the terminal entrance would cost the airport nothing. The Irmo Fire Commission would care for it. The memorial would feature two crossed steel beams from the World Trade Center Tower One and the names of local first responders who died in action. The commission reception seemed less than enthusiastic. Chairman Elsie Rast Stuart said the commission will review the plan and make a decision in 2011.

Company X to bring 1,000+ jobs – A new company, bringing more than 1000 jobs may be coming to the county. County Council gave initial approval to a fee in liew of taxes agreement last week for the new firm, identified only as Project ASAP. The value of that agreement will be determined by the amount of investment the company makes in Lexington County. “This will be a great thing for everybody,” said County Council Chairman Jim Kinard. “It’s a great fit for the county industrial park” and will bring a substantial number and variety of jobs to the county, Kinard said. But first, negotiations with the company have to be finalized, he said.

County ponies up cash for bus service – Lexington County will spend $75,000 to keep bus service in place through June 2011. The cost is about $23,000 more than county leaders agreed to pay in September. “It’s a higher price, but we don’t have any other options,” said Lexington County Council member Debbie Summers, who represents the county on the Central Midlands Regional Transit Authority board. The RTA proposed the new agreement to county leaders after a one-cent penny sales tax increase was defeated by Richland County voters in the November general election. Money from the sales tax would have helped fund bus operations in the Midlands. The new deal means the county will now spend $8,400 per month to run bus routes and Dial A Ride Transit buses in Lexington County until June 30. Those costs could increase if fuel prices or DART ridership goes up during the next seven months.

Many county schools rated excellent – Lexington County schools continue to bring home passing grades on school report cards. Twenty five of the 57 county elementary and middle schools received excellent ratings on report cards issued by the state Department of Education. All five school districts had schools rated at the excellent level. Their grades were in line with statewide results where more schools passing grades in 2010. Lexington/Richland 5, in the Irmo-Chapin area, had the most schools rated excellent with 12. Every district showed improvement and county-wide only two schools showed declines.

Carolighting: – The Town of Lexington is celebrating the holiday season with the 35^th Annual Carolighting on Thursday, Dec. 2 at 6:30p.m. at Virginia Hylton Park, located behind Town Hall (111 Maiden Lane). Children of all ages will be dazzled when the Mayor, Town Council and USA Miss Teen SC, Madison Oswald, light up the park with the Town’s official Christmas Tree, a special Meet and Greet with Santa will conclude the night’s festivities.

The City of West Columbia will hold the sixth annual “Christmas Tree Lighting” on Friday Dec. 3 at 6:30p.m. in front of City Hall. A massed choir assembled from local churches and will perform in addition to a hand bell choir.

Fifth Annual Christmas At Red Bank – For the fifth year in a row, the Christmas At Red Bank concert will feature a lineup of talented local and regional musical artists performing traditional and not so traditional Christmas songs. The 2010 edition is scheduled for Sunday, Dec. 5 at 6:30p.m. at Red Bank United Methodist Church, 2909 Old Barnwell Road in Lexington. The concert is free. There is an offering received for LICS.
