Sheriff Adds Security Enhancement to Dam Walkway – On Thursday, April 7, Lexington County Sheriff James R. Metts, Lexington County Councilman Johnny Jeffcoat and SCE&G officials demonstrated emergency call boxes that have been installed in order to enhance the personal safety of persons who use the Johnny W. Jeffcoat Walkway along S.C. 6 on the Dreher Shoals Dam on Lake Murray near Lexington. One emergency call box is located in a parking lot along the lake on the Lexington side of the dam that is reserved for person who walk on the heavily utilized walkway. The second call box is located at the end of the walkway along the lake on the Irmo side of the dam. The call box is clearly marked as an emergency call box, and a blue light is activated on top of the box when a call is placed through the call box. The installation of the emergency call boxes will provide reassurance for the many people who use the walkway.

SCE&G Honored for Outstanding Stewardship – The National Hydropower Association has honored SCE&G as well as six other exceptional programs and practices of hydropower organizations through its annual Outstanding Stewards of America’s Waters (OSAW) Awards. SCE&G along with the other award winners have established significant, innovative projects that serve as models for the hydro industry. Lexington Irmo Lake Murray Real Estate Update 04-18-2011

Okra Strut Closer to a New Home – The Irmo Okra Strut may finally have a new home – at least for this year. Town leaders want to move the popular festival to the eastern end of Saluda Shoals Park near the intersection of St. Andrews and Bush River roads. The move, approved last week, ends plans to spend $230,000 for a 14.5 acre tract of land near Friarsgae for a festival site. While the new plan has the support of town and festival organizers, it still faces a few hurdles. The Irmo Chapin Recreation Commission, which ownds the property, will have to agree to the move. The commission is expected to rule on the plan when it meets April 27. The current proposal is for the 2011 festival only. But town leaders hope to convince the commission to make the park the festival’s permanent home. The site will need some grading and maintenance for the two-day festival. The plan calls for the commission to do the initial grading work. The town will then maintain the area and add electrical poles and other staging areas necessary to hold the festival. Approval of the plan could end a two-year search for a home for the 39 year old festival.

Lexington Receives Distiguished Award – The Town of Lexington received the 2011 Distinguished Budget Presentation Award from the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada during the April Council Meeting. This is the second straight year the Town has received this honor. This prestigious award was only received by a handful of jurisdictions in the state (less than 20) encompassing Counties, Municipalities, School Districts and Water/Sewer Districts. The GFOA established the Distinguished Budget Presentation Awards Program in 1984 to encourage and assist state and local governments to prepare budget documents of the very highest quality that reflect both the guidelines established by the National Advisory Council on State and Local Budgeting and the GFOA’s best practices on budgeting and then to recognize individual governments that succeed in achieving the goal.

Firefighters Collecting for Burn Center in Boot Drive – On Friday, April 22 and Saturday, April 23 firefighters from area Fire Departments and members of Lexington County EMS will participate in the tenth annual Jeff Chavis Boot Drive to collect funds to support the operations of the Jeffrey Vaden Chavis House at the Joseph M. FDIC lifts consent order for Congaree State Bank Congaree Bancshares Inc., the holding company for Congaree State Bank, received notification from bank regulators that the consent order it was under with the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. has been lifted.

Developers: State must keep its word to Amazon

The group that represents South Carolina’s economic development has weighed in on the sales tax collection issue regarding Amazon’s proposed regional distribution center in Lexington County. Foreclosure filings down over 12% across S.C. for Q1 A double-digit downturn in first-quarter foreclosure filings in South Carolina doesn’t indicate a robust rebound, according to a real estate tracking firm. Most of South Carolina’s largest counties also reported double-digit declines in foreclosure filings against distressed properties from Q1 of 2010. Precision launches pharmaceutical division Precision Walls Inc., which operates in Greer, West Columbia and North Charleston, has launched a new division to handle construction for the pharmaceutical and biotech industries.

Indie Grits Film Festival: Nickelodeon Theatre Now – Sunday, April 17, 2011 The fifth annual Indie Grits Film Festival, a juried film competition, will take place at several venues in downtown Columbia. In celebration of the fifth anniversary of Indie Grits, the festival will feature several new exciting events, including famed filmmaker Helen Hill’s final work, “The Florestine Dresses.” Hill, a native of Columbia, was making this film when she was killed in her home in New Orleans in 2006. Hill’s husband, Paul Gailiunas, has been working to finish the film for several years, and the film will debut at Indie Grits.
