BlueCross gets top rating from A.M. Best The credit rating organization has given BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina its top rating of A+, or superior, for its financial strength. BlueCross was cited for strong market share in its core line; continuous profitability on a consolidated basis; and well-diversified revenue and earnings. German-based parts maker to locate in Lowcountry Dannecker Fine-Tec Gmbh will set up its North American operation in the Lowcountry, the S.C. Department of Commerce announced Wednesday. The company, which manufactures pieces used in aerospace, medical, semiconductor and hydraulic operations, is set to invest $3 million and create 40 jobs in the next few years.

S.C. insurance official re-elected to lead national area Scott Richardson, director of the S.C. Department of Insurance, will again serve as chairman of the Southeastern Zone of the National Association of Insurance Commissioners. His term will begin Jan. 1. Employment agency asks for input on proposed changes The S.C. Department of Employment and Workforce wants employers to offer feedback on electronic filing of quarterly returns and a proposed change to regulations that would require faster submission of employee wage data.

Taylor Made: The Art of Anna Heyward Taylor Now through January 2, 2011. Born in Columbia, South Carolina, Anna Heyward Taylor (1879-1956) was instrumental in the Charleston Renaissance and remains one of the most important 20th century artists in the state. Principally drawn from the permanent collection of the Columbia Museum of Art, Taylor Made explores the process by which Anna Heyward Taylor designed and executed her prints. The exhibition includes watercolors, preliminary sketches and drawings, and numerous final prints and the actual blocks used in their creation. The exhibition was organized by the Columbia Museum of Art in conjunction with the forthcoming publication of the book, The Selected Letters of Anna Heyward Taylor: South Carolina Artist and World Traveler, by the University of South Carolina Press, and commemorates the sixtieth anniversary of Taylor’s retrospective exhibition at the Museum in 1950.

Lake Murray Real Estate Update 12-29-2010

 

DNR will consider speed limits and boater education – Boating safety issues will be on DNR’s list of things to do for next legislative session. According to spokesman Brett Witt the agency will investigate the need for new regulations, including speed limits and mandatory training for those who boat on the state’s public waterways. And in spite of the budget crunch, the agency hopes to hire at least 10 new officers to replace almost 60 positions lost due to past budget cuts. The agency needs to maintain a minimum core of officers in order to perform its functions required by law. Witt stated that information recently published in the State newspaper article, “Push for speed limits and boater education dropped,” was incorrect, a result of a miscommunication on his part. The article has renewed public interest in boating safety concerns, which heightened last May when 4 lives were lost in two boating accidents near Goat Island and the Coast Guard Auxiliary Station.

New Lake Murray Safety Consortium meets – The Lake Murray Safety Consortium recently held its’ fourth meeting this fall aboard the Lake Tours vessel, the “Southern Patriot.” The meeting was hosted by the Lake Murray Association with 16 attendees representing the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, the Lake Murray Power Squadron, the S.C. Department of Natural Resources, the Lexington County Sheriff’s Dept., the Newberry Sheriff’s Dept., SCE&G and a Lake Resident. Dave Landis, LMA president, reported the Association had received a check from Sea Tow for $1,050 part of which was to be used for the purchase of “Chem Lights” which are used as a temporary get home fix by the enforcement agencies for boats who have lost their running lights at night. DNR indicated they have begun a boating education for School Resource Officers in order that the latter can begin teaching an 8 hr. course at the middle school level. RCSD reported on a new and exciting system to pinpoint locations on the Lake which is covered in a separate article.

Construction barometer mixed in S.C. The 2011 outlook is more optimistic in the Upstate than the Lowcountry, according to the latest construction barometer released by Carolinas Associated General Contractors. The barometer did show increased activity in the third quarter, however, despite the absence of federal stimulus spending. Legal settlement boosts results for Doctors Care parent Net income for the year increased slightly and benefited from a settlement with the company’s former CFO. While fiscal year profits and revenues increased, results for the quarter ended Sept. 30 were down compared to the same quarter last year.

Biotech firm to begin production in Fairfield County

Winnsboro-based Montana Biopolymers plans to have its first production line ready for testing in April and expects to add approximately 10 jobs in the first two years. The company will also continue to develop a line of adhesives it has on the market. Man convicted in e-mail scam must repay victim A Greenville man received 27 months’ imprisonment for his role in a three-year e-mail scam that falsely promised a reward for assisting in the transfer of monies from Africa to the United States. A federal judge ordered him to pay more than $147,000 in restitution to his victim.

Security Federal Corp. appoints new leadership The Aiken-based holding company for Security Federal Bank announced today that H. Odell Weeks Jr. has been appointed as a director of the company and the bank, J. Chris Verenes will be CEO and Frank M. Thomas Jr. will be president, all effective Jan. 1. Sisters of Charity gives thousands more in grants The foundation gave 22 Caritas grants totaling $51,000 to nonprofit and faith-based organizations across South Carolina. The grants come shortly after the foundation distributed $260,000 in other grants.
