Friday February 25, 2011 – May 22, 2011

The exhibition includes 175 works by more than 100 photographers, and covers the rock and roll era from the 1950s to the present, including some of the world’s most iconic images. It was organized by the prestigious Brooklyn Museum of Art and opened there to rave reviews and record-breaking attendance. The Columbia Museum of Art is the last stop on the nation-wide traveling tour. Admission is free on opening day, Friday, February 25, courtesy of BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina. Kenny “Babyface” Edmonds: The Koger Center

Friday February 25, 2011
If you were to closely examine the annals of modern pop music history, few creative forces have been more seminal or impacted the contemporary pop/urban genres as much as Kenny “Babyface” Edmonds. In a relatively short time, he has reached icon status as a poignant tunesmith, prolific hit maker/producer, superstar recording artist, and revolutionary label owner. He is a statistical juggernaut, who keeps adding milestone after milestone to a legacy that seems to have no threshold or peak in sight. A 10-time Grammy winner with 11 solo albums of his own, Edmonds’ impeccably crafted explorations of love, romance and relationships have made an indelible imprint on the evolution of contemporary pop music throughout the world: over 125 Top-10 R&B and Pop hits, 42 #1’s R&B hits, and 51 Top-10 Pop hits (including 16 #1’s), which have produced single and album sales in excess of over 500 million units worldwide.

Lexington Irmo Lake Murray Real Estate Update 02-25-2011

Wounded Marine receives a hero’s welcome home – LCpl. Kyle Carpenter was welcomed home in Lexington County. The Lance Corporal was welcomed by American flag waving citizens who just wanted to show their support and appreciation for the Marine’s service and sacrifice. Kyle was seriously wounded last November in Afghanistan, and is on convalescent leave until March 17 when he returns to Bethesda Naval Hospital for surgery on his right ear drum. Kyle received a direct blast from a hand grenade while in combat. He has received multiple surgeries since then. His father, Jim said he never dreamed that his son would come home so “repaired” especially after seeing him for the first time last Thanksgiving with catastrophic wounds over his body. “But the prayers of countless believers and the superb medical care given to the military wounded has made the difference.” Having their son at home will give parents Jim and Robin and the entire family a chance to return to some normalcy. On or both of the parents have been at his bedside since his return to the states. Jordan Gleaton, Kyle’s girlfriend who left her classes at USC to be at his bedside continues in the military tradition of “standing by her man”. His brothers twins Price and Peyton, students at Lexington High are reported to be ready for his return. One of the first places Kyle wants to go is to visit his parents’ Sunday School class at Lexington Baptist Church, The “V” Class.

Texting and driving ban gets green light – Drivers distracted by texting may be in big trouble. Sen. Jake Knotts of West Columbia says lawmakers may pass a texting-while-driving ban this session. Rep. Kenny Bingham of Cayce, the House Majority Leader, said if the Senate passes it, the House should pass it too. We’ve already passed a ban twice but the Senate didn’t do anything with it, he said, “If they pass it this year, I see no reason we won’t do it, too. The Senate bill would: Require a $100 fine plus two points on your license for first and subsequent convictions of violating the ban. First time offenders could have both fine and points suspended if they pay $35 and attend the state’s traffic safety classes. Knotts said the $100 fine may not seem like much, but two points on a violator’s license will cost hundreds of dollars in additional auto insurance premiums.

Hospital: Duke best deal for heart center – Lexington Medical Center found a compatible partner in Duke Medical for their journey into heart surgery. Duke is one of the top 10 hospitals in the U.S. with years of experience in recruiting and training heart surgeons, anesthesiologists and support personnel, according to Mark Shelley, LMC’s director of Marketing and Advertising. Shelley was responding to questions from the Chronicle prompted by queries from our readers. Asked why the hospital did not enter into an arrangement with the Medical University of SC, Shelley said MUSC has no affiliate program. Duke was chosen after months of exploring other options. “Their culture is like ours,” Shelley said. “This is more than just credentials. We went to their facilities. We met with their people. They came here and met with us. “Everybody felt they have very similar values. Their approach is “What’s best for the patients.” “This is not taxpayer money”, Shelley said. “This is coming out of operating dollars.” “It’s not costing the taxpayers anything.” Compared to the $15 million the hospital is paying Providence Hospital to give up one of its heart surgery rooms, he said, the cost is minimal. “Our affiliation with Duke shows our commitment to a world class heart service,” LMC CEO Mike Biediger said. It’s a five year contract. “Our investment is $585,000 the first year which is when our work will be most intense. The other four years will be less, depending on the services they provide.”

Lake Murray Real Estate Update 02-04-2011

Bass angler McMurtury wins Lake Murray tourney – South Carolina bass angler Ryan McMurtury on Saturday won the Toyota Bassmaster Weekend Series opener for its South Carolina division, which was held on Lake Murray. Less than three weeks before his Bassmaster Classic debut, the Abbeville man won the boater division with four bass weighing 16.53 pounds to collect $2,745. He anchored his bag with the 6.7 pound tournament lurker. “I caught my fish on small, flat sided crankbaits,” McMurtury said. “I stayed in about seven feet of water and threw into two feet of water. Every cast I had to slap the grass off the bait. I was bumping the bottom hard. About 30 minutes before, I had to come in, I caught my fourth fish, a 4 pounder that hit a deep-diving crankbait out of a brush pile in about 15 feet of water.” Placing second among the boaters, Chuck Howard of Elloree landed four bass going 15.33 pounds with a 5.48 pound kicker. He went home with a check for $1,373. Keith Ashley of Greenwood followed in third with a tournament limit of five bass going 13.53 pounds fishing shallow water with crankbaits. The boat was in eight feet of water, but the fish were in about four feet of water, Ashley said. The boat was in eight feet of water, but the fish were in about four feet of water.
